So you are heading out through the break, a wall of white water barreling towards you, a good metre or so high. Do you pick up the pace and try and jump it, slow down and try lift over it, or turn tail and head back for another run. Not asking what I should do so much as curious as to what you do.
All of the above if I'm trying to get out the back, if I can get a clean jump way over and past the back of the white water I will, if not next best option is a little pop and lift those legs up to get clear but I'm never afraid to turn and get the hell out of dodge and have another crack at it.
In reality I look at every way as a ramp on the way out, not as a wave I want to surf back in, I'm always trying to hit the face before it peels over, if I can't time it right i'll turn back in before I even get there. I don't always time it right and boost as well but it's fun trying.
If you have straps jump it or at least send the kite slightly for some lift.
If you are strapless you still need a bit of speed to lift over it, I still send the kite slightly to gain lift.
If you truly reckon you'll get wacked turn around and try again. But the more you confront the whitewash the better you'll get. I usually only turn around if it's big and just broken right in front of me AND strapless.
Thanks for the input gents, it seems to me getting out in the surf on a TT is all about aggression. The more aggressive you are the less likely you are to come unstuck.. most of the time. Will give the wave pop a try next time I'm out.
I'm still a relative newby one year into kiting, but I find a 1 meter broken wave is pretty easy to bounce over. 2 meters is getting challenging, particulary if it has has just broken. But if its settled you can get over it. But over 2 meters I gybe and come back for another go.
^^^ lol yep - you have to love the chicken gybe. I'm known for them. It must be the feathers...
