Heading over to work the Cleve field days. Can't wait!
Taking the gear in case i get a chance.
Anyone suggest the nearest few places and any tips on using them.
Cheers.

Mmm that's a hard one, not really many spots near Cleve... And the wind round here is pretty crappy right now. If you get a southerly whyalla kicks ass, near cowell there would have to be a few beaches like lucky bay...other than that I don't know. Pt Lincoln has a few spots but u have to be willing to drive...

At this time of the year pray for 2 or 3 strong fronts after the 2nd front passes and the 3rd one is blowing strong westerly head straight for Poverty Bay.There is a road direct from Cleve almost level with the poverty turn off and the worst road you have been on.The bay has a rather fun right hander that can get head high on the best swells.Freakin cold tho

Not much chance of a kite in Whyalla this time of year. Cowell might be ok if a North Wester is blowing. Keep your fingers crossed for Poverty. Have to agree with EB, can be a great spot in the right conditions.

Can't wait for summer!!

Cheers

I would agree that the road to poverty bay is the worst road i have driven on, the coragation is that bad that if you hit your brakes you will fly off in to the scrub. If you go slowly your car will fall to pieces and if you go fast there are some nice lime stone outcrops to jump.

The chances of getting 1 front let alone 3 fronts there at this time of year is a million to one, despite what the others are saying a westerly would be a bad wind direction to go out on at poverty as it is off shore. As far as swell at poverty, the only swell is a combination of wind and tide swell mainly tide, there is only swell(minimal 1-1/2ft) and not very solid on the incoming tide but it needs to be a big fast moving tide like the ones in summer to be good, the tides in winter are a lot higher but dont move in or out as far or fast, this allso has the afect of making the swell lupy more like big white caps braking and reforming.

If you are really keen for a kite check the forcast and if there is wind hit up the west coast, not to far to go from cleve, the winds there this time of year are a lot more consistent and there are a lot of choices to kite from flat water to waves what ever you like. If you dont want to travel try lucky bay just out of cowell back towards Whyalla it's got a nice beach to drive along head up the beach away from the shacks there is a point and some nice flat water.

Good luck,

Welcome back Waxy.
Long time no post.
You are right about the west coast, especially Walkers Rocks at Elliston.
Much better than anything else on the east coast of Eyre Pennisula.

its not much of a drive if you cut strait across the peninsula, you dont need to go to lincon. If there isnt any wind you could do some 4wd/ing, go for a surf or just check out the coast.

not to sure how much spare time you have, last time i went to the cleve field days it took me 2 days to look around. Bring some good hikeing boots you will be walking up and down a hill all day long

sweet information, thanks everyone.

I'm actually working at the field days, selling silos and grain stuff, so should be sitting on my Fat Arse for three days and leave the hill walking to the punters

I doubt i'll get to travel far, so cowell might be the best option. are there several locations on lucky bay that work on most wind directions?

I used to go out at wallaroo and Pt Victoria in a 1mm wetsuit with a 2mm vest, Will i need anything warmer than that?

I'd like to explore the rest of the peninsula too one day, if not this trip, does it blow from october to feb most days like the YP?

If a southerly kicks in it could really get cold, but lately the weather has been good. I would wear a full wetsuit but its up to you. I used to live in moonta and swam all year around in a spring suit the water temp is not to bad, but kiteboarding the wind chill is what gets you.

There are a lot of spots around cowell that work in different conditions you need a 4wd to get to some of them especially for the spots that work in a northerly. Be careful of razor fish there can be a lot around in some spots. This time of year you will either get light conditions or 35kts + if you get anything. Good luck.

Hey CollinWill,

There are some brilliant spots near Cowell if you know where to go, and you can kite in any wind direction.
I usually get my best kite sessions during winter but this year has been a dud. Barely any winter fronts

I'll give you a buzz if the forecast looks good. If not there are plenty of beer tents at the field days

Bring the 9 and 12, you never know what the wind will do over winter.

If you're from Vic then you already know how cold it is.

Doesn't look like i'll get much time while i'm here, but this weekend on the way home i reackon i'll stop in at port germain unless someone has a better suggestion. I like the look of that place, a bit like chinamans well a bit further south.
been windy enough at times though
