I wonder if the beach area at Port Paterson might be ok, just south of the Powerhouse on Google earth. I think it needs a highish tide. Though if I were learning, I reakon I'd spend some time kiting with the guys around Whyalla. Port Paterson doesn't have much passing traffic to keep an eye out for you if it goes to sh1t.

Sometimes I kite outside the Port Augusta shacks when I'm there on hols; it's not exactly a sandy Oacis of kite friendliness for launching and landing given the roughness of terrain- so I wouldn't really recommend it for learning.

Cheers

I met a guy that used to be a school teacher in Pt Augusta and he used to go out on the river/gulf right next to the Shoreline Top Tourist Park. This view is looking north from the launch area.

Gday Grassyn...Pt Augusta can be a dodgey place to learn to kite. You have to watch the tide alot and as the other guys have mentioned ****ty beaches with sharp **** and mangroves.. The caravan park is def a great spot once you have it sussed and also the hospital beach. Pattersons is a great place to learn but not sure if you can get there anymore. We kite there a fair bit when we are up there teaching SUP and when we are teaching Kite in Whyalla. Sam is the school teacher Coastflyer is talking about and lives in Quorn and kites there heaps. He won't teach you but will def help you after you have had a lesson or two. We will be teaching in Whyalla in the next few weeks if you are keen and want Sams number just give me a buzz. Could possibly help you out with kite choice too if you would like.

Heyo,
It's a little bit down the road, but I spend every windy moment at Port Germein. Seems safe enough, winds are 90% on shore or cross-onshore. The beach is sandy without too many cutty shells and there are usually a bunch of people looking on from the jetty which makes it seem safer. JUST don't park you car on the beach - I spent one night trying desperately to rescue some Polish dude's car - he had parked on the beach to set up and didn't get back in time due to gear failure - the car was a written-off.
