Just learning, so spend time doing body drag. Based in Brisbane. Was going to head to Shearwater to practice, but having read about bull sharks thinking I should drive the extra 1/2 hour and head to Golden Beach Caloundra. Sounds like it may seriously be worth it re safety???
there are bullies in the braordwater (shearwater and KFC or lodders creek are in the broardwater system), but ive been living near shearwater for 5 years n ive never heard of anyone getting bitten by a bully. a few ppl have said that they have had bullies swim close to them or brush up against them but never bitten. when ur in the water with ur kite ready to water launch with ur board, the lines and bar, safety leash, harness etc or even when your body dragging u simply don't look like their food source to them. also if ur there with say half a dozen other riders theres too much water activity n they'll most likely bugger off also boats help keep them away. theres too much food for them up in the canals for them to be worried about you. basically they are there, but the water isn't infested with them. ur more likely to get bitten by a shark surfing than body dragging around shearwater.
thanks redman666 - by the way what is shearwater like in terms of having a lot of shallow water? i.e. does it have waist deep water that goes out a long way, or is it pretty much just your normal drop off into deeper water?
not really any sand bars at shearwater. pretty much gradually gets deeper as you go out. you can probably only walk out 20m or so before you cant touch.
If your learning to drag, best to stay clear of Loders Creek. There are more sharks there than Shearwater as its much closer to the seaway where people fish and bait the water.
Plus the locals dont seem to like tourists clogging up the narrow area where everyone launches from.
But there is plenty of room at Shearwater for all the Learners to play around!
There are bull sharks in the Passage ( Golden Beach ) . All esteries along SE QLD has bull sharks .
That extra half hour drive to the Sunny Coast could be more satistically dangerous than than the threat of shark attack .
The only shark I have have seen in the broawater was at Shearwater , it swam past ,payed no attention to me .
that's a good read ggh. most of my knowledge of bullies comes from fishing for them. the best spots are the canals on dusk where there is less water activity and less light which makes it prime for them to hunt. humans are not on ANY sharks food list. some times we mimic their food n we get bit.
Surprised so many people a worried about sharks kitesurfing, try spearfishing at dusk berleying up fish, watching the sharks personalities change It had been my experience sharks aren't interested in humans any other time
Sharks are the last thing to worry about when kite boarding at KFC. It's the crocodiles you don't see.

Its a beautiful 4.6m ally gorilla two piece extention ladder with ergonomic feet rungs, eight per extention. Perfect for those kitters who like parking their kites in special spots high out reach of envious and jealous griffin kite flyers, who dont know what there missing out on by not flying a c4
Opps i meant to say that they should all be riding a cabrinha as these kites are the best on the planet...
There is lots of sharks in there, seen one last month at the island at shearwater, seen one at kite island, and a big one at the sand bar at kfc even made me stop for a longer look, Paul saw one at loaders last week. i see more sharks in there than in the open ocean. that's way i don't kite loaders anymore.
I saw the one last week and..... it was a dolphin....got a good clear look at it as it buzzed along beside me chasing fish.
heard today a fisherman pulled up a big 3m bull shark just of seaworld, in the broadwater. "jaws" is living up to its name.
i was trying to learn a new trick the other day but couldnt quite get the rotation because there was a bull shark hanging off the end of my board. i heard troy had one hanging off his arm last week and dislocated his shoulder poor bloke is gonna be out for weeks. bloody bull sharks
