Just throwing it out there for those going into their first Tassie winter... keep looking over your shoulder, those fronts creep up damn fast. And think about switching your surf wettie for a windsports wettie or drysuit. Our mate Damo can help out there, he's been sorting out the pole dancers for years.
Forecast for this weekend looks crap, if anybody spots any decent wind even a llama fart let me know i'm keen as.
Hi Tassy kiteboarders. I am very new to Tassy and somewhat a beginner in kiteboarding, can stay upwind only every other time...
Any advice on getting into kiteboarding here? Or should I be waiting till summer? Would like to learn about the beginner friendly places around Hobart if such exist.
Seems like people are advising to wear gloves... Is 4/5 wetsuit too thin for the winter here?
Thanks in advance!
On the inside bay of the neck on the way to south arm is nice and shallow (touch the bottom and walk up wind when required) and sandy bottom. good place to learn on Northerly winds. self launching and landing not recomended for beginners but if you have a mate to launch, walk out a bit in the water and launch far away from the road and you can't go wrong, same goes with the landing or pull your safety and walk up a line.
At this time of year winds can be scketchy at best, water is starting to get very cold but can be bareable in good gear.
Can be a fair walk to the water if it is a low tide.
Hi, thanks! Sounds like there may be a few chances to kiteboard for me. Shallow is good. Any chance you could mark these spots with an 'x' on a map? Just moved to Tassy, not familiar with any of the locations, although can approximate by your description. May be best to drive out there on a windy day and chat with others?
What is the thickness of the proper gear for the Tassy winter?
Thanks again!
Hey Yuliya, by memory this request pops up about every 6 months... there once was a map and ratings but all that got lost along with Llama's virginity at the Nationals in 2011... Llama's don't have pockets so he was always going to loose it no matter what.... You might find it in the dunes at Warrnambool or try clicking back a few pages on the forum.. There are a few threads with the same question.
A full tank of fuel, spare Saturday and google earth should be able to allow you to check out most spots around Hobart's south arm area.
Seems to be a lot of talk about this cold water. Any of you "old hands" gonna get wet this weekend? or is the pull of the ugg boots and scones got you beat?
Yeah thanks Ando the 'bool will neva be the same again, it had it all. There should have been a ninja kicking street division, we would have full cleaned up.
Yuliya here's a previous post on kitespots: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/Tasmania/How-Near-to-the-Hobart-Airport-can-we-Kite/
Make sure you bring a thick wettie, 5/4/3 is fine boots vest hood etc or a drysuit. And don't be surprised if you get lapped by a penguin on a tack, those monsters are fast.
Saturday is looking good at this stage... whose turn is it to bring half time scones?
I Have to be out of the water by 1-2pm so i can snatch a couple of hours at the "Red Wine Weekend" at the princess street wharf = $25 for 50+ wines. Looks like there will be a few options for a run though, where are you all heading?
and some sideways rain to go with that too? Might need the coldies more than the shapes... will update with a location when I'm looking at it... S to SW at this stage, might even give Clifton a looky
Looking very onshore for park beach but let me know where you all decide to head. I'm in, it's been way too long. I need to get into the rubbers again, especially after watching uni revue last night.
Yeah too right with the on shore voitek... A boost session at marionbay lagoon could be on the cards
And just to clarify what are the: shapes and coldy?
Since I am at it, where is the best place in Hobart to get the hoody and some fin bolts?
Thanks for the link to the map description :) and advice from all!
Hey there,
Today we had a very challenging kite at park beach, Carlton. It was a bit too onshore and although it didn't look that big, it was head high out the back.
Others went to Marion bay lagoon, flat water. May well have been a better option. I reckon 7 mile could have been ok too as a compromise between the two.
Oh yeah...
Shapes=crappy salty biscuit
Coldy=cold beer
Well, as far as I understand anyway. I admit, I was not born in oz.
Wooo! mad kite at Marion bay lagoon, 6m fully sheeted out and was still pulling like a 15 yr old with his own bedroom!!
Kited about 12 to 2pm... Looking at the charts I now realize why the caps were frothy.
Was impressed with Llama's C4 7m performance, looked kinda steady up there in the gusts... What did it feel like on the water Llama?
Frothies were foaming all over the bay like a barrista whipping up cappuccinos... Felt pretty good up there at 15000ft Ando, am yet to master the in-air-board-eject method you had going on there... could have got more hang time with matching footstraps
Not sure where you'll get a hoody from, Red Herring might be having a sale.... Fin bolt you'll prob get from bunnings.
Voitek cheers for the heads up earlier, owe you one brother
Epic set of avatars there fellas, good to see your frothing out on on decent winds down there!
Qld is just steady wind with the odd drop, no damn gusts to boost with! Arrgghh!
Keep on kicking the hard weather dudes and send it before the gust gets to ya for a real llama kick!!
Eeeeooorrrrr eeooorrrrrr!!
Hey fellas saw a couple of kites up at stanley's east inlet yesterday. Looked cold with sw winds. If it was anyone on here, how deep was it over where u were? Will have to meet some of yas next time.
Cheers
yeah mate thanks for the useful info. Where else up the NW do you head out, any other flat water spots?
