Hi Guys,
I'm just about to fall asleep and I can't take this idea out of my head.
A couple of weeks ago I lost my mum after a short and aggressive battle against Cancer.
I promised myself at the start of her treatment that if she recovers I was going to challenge myself and cross the bay from Sorreento-Port Melbourne.
Unfortunaly God said otherwise and she could not recover. She was the stronger woman I've ever met and in her memory I've decided to take the challenge any way for those who still battling and for those who are gone.
I don't know when exactly yet. I believe sometime early Jan. I've done Mordialloc-PM, I want to think this is about double the distance if not a bit more. Good endurance challenge.
If there are more people interested we can organize something more formal and perhaps get media involved as well as some sponsors.
So, if you are interested let me know...
Cheers
Cesar
i will be there with my ski as a support vehicle. james storm will be into it and i think bernie and nat (who crossed bass straight) would be starters. if u are going to mamabo we can work on a plan there.
Keen to be involved too. Keep me in the loop with the progress on the details...If you need assistance setting the details up shoot me a PM, happy to help.
I am interested. Probably on my raceboard. PM me with details. I might be able to arrange for a second Jetski backup too.
I am in. Mordy to port was relatively easy but this will test a bit. You will need someone to save you in case you get in trouble. Note you are way out in the bay in one section so support advisable. Once again sorry to hear about your mum mate.
Great to see how everyone is getting on BOARD! I was thinking some of the logistics and starting from getting a mini bus and the support jetskies and checking for any council permits, sponsors, media, etc. I thought organizing a meeting might be easier.
I understand there is a shop happy to participate. Perhaps there or somewhere else that can be more suitable for everyone.
Any suggestions?
Cesar
I was thinking of finishing the event with a big BBQ at Garden City, so the families and friends could join the riders.
Over the weekend I talked to a potential sponsor and did first approach with Peter Mac.
Does anyone have any contacts with media? Radio or TV? I'd like to make some publicity for 4-6 weeks prior to the event.
If anyone have ideas and wants to discuss them over the phone, my number is 0425 694 763
Cesar
Cesar, sorry to hear about your mum too. Take it easy for a while.
The Alfred Foundation is a good cause and may be interested in fundraising too.
I think it would be worth contacting the Water Police & Police Search and Rescue so they know it is on and is well planned & supported etc. I know a couple of the SAR guys so I can contact them when plans firm up.
Regarding media, the main TV and News could be interested, but all local papers would almost certainly run it too (e.g. Leader news). One disadvantage with media is that if there are any problems, they will be broadcast . . .
Thanks boys...all that sadnes has been transformed in positive energy and I'm working hard in making this kitesurfing marathon a yearly tradition.
we could make the Kraken available but kiters would have to chip in for fuel.
7.8m RIB in 2C survey full firstaid and radio support.
Great idea. lost my mum to an aggressive brain tumour in january... Count me in even if im not fit enough ill help out how I can... And sorry for your loss.
Cant really assist on the media front...
WAKSA have a yearly fundraising downwinder where kiters pay a small entrance fee with funds going to www.redkite.org.au/ A number of other companies donate goods and services that are either used for the event or handed out for prizes to participants.
www.waksa.org.au/kitesurfing-events/event/10-redkite-charity-downwinder
Redkite maybe interested in getting involved.
I'm getting a quote for the flyers and posters.
Does anyone have contacts with a bus company? I think we should all or the majority travel by bus from PM so we leave personal transportation at the BBQ area (arriving point).
About boats and jetskies, I believe the costs will be taken by sponsor's money.
I don't think riders should pay, however, a generous donation will always be well received.
In relation to the date of this marathonic event, I was thinking potentially on Australia Day weekend ( Sat-Sun-Mon) weather permiting. Ideally 20+ S, SSW.
Ive got good contacts with a function hire companny.. Speakers, tents etcmight be able to get them involved
Sorry to hear about the passing of your mum Caesar.
Cancer is a horrific disease. Perhaps this site may interest you- it's a fund raising site- where you choose any challenging task-in this case " kite the Bay" and you also get to nominate a beneficiary cause of your own choice- say "kids with cancer, or cancer research " and people donate money.
Check it out:
You too can build your own fundraising webpage with GoFundraise in 6 easy steps. Choose from any of our page types or formulate your own and support a worthy Australian charity. For more information go to www.gofundraise.com.au/online-fundraising
I'm also keen for the challenge to kite the Bay. I also have a jet ski available if required.
Cheers Graeme
Well guys I have to say, I get shivers every time I see a new message of support to this great cause! I am really exited seeing how this is getting gradually out of control.
I have to say, this is now no longer a one man job and I need help.
Therefore, I thought of delegating task to those who can help. There, will be more jobs coming up as we get busier.
Firstly, we need a Safety Officer: who will be inchared of organising and coordinating the support vehicles (water) jet skis, boats, etc and developing a contingence plan (following, supervising and the rescue plan. I nominate Sean (PGC)since he came up with the idea. Please confirm via PM or text (0425 694 763)
Website administrator: I had a good look to GOFUNDRAISE.COM.AU and I think thats the way to go. People (donators) can follow the updates and donate as we go (it allows pics, videos etc). I nominate Graeme (Selwyn) since he came up with the idea. Please confirm via PM or text (0425 694 763).
In the mean time, Im getting KBV on board to help us with all the permits and insurance issues.
Also, looking for a printing company that could do the flyers, posters and t-shirts printing (if someone knows one let us know!).
Sponsorsors: looking for companies (small, medium and big ones such us Red Bull Gatorade, etc.) if anyone has contacts it makes the job easier...
The idea is to design a T-shirs that will have all the sponsors in it. So, depending on the contribution it will be the exposure in the clothing, posters and flyers and website. Also, any other type of publicity that likes to be displayed will be welcome.
The spirit of event like this most of the times get damaged by money issues. That's why all money coming in and out will be published at the end of the event. .
The time frame for all this tasks will be to the end of Novemenber. The idea is to run the event in the last week of Jan so, 8 weeks of advertising will do the job of getting every Victorian (and perhaps Australians) aware of our "never before seen" physical challenge!
Thanks again for all your support. We need more!!! There will be millions of things that I may forget to consider so, please post it.
Hi mate
Sorry to hear about your mum, this sounds like a great initiative and would love to give it a go, but will see how I am skill level wise by that time!
Good luck with everything you are doing!
I'd be keen. I think a small fee for particpation to cover fuel and a one way mini bus to sorrento etc would be a good idea.
Hi Cesar,
Sorry to hear about your mum.
I'm keen to get on board, I love a good downwinder.
I'm a TV producer and graphic designer so I can help you out with some design services and/or video content production.
PM me if you'd like to know more and if I can help in any way.
Cheers,
Rob
How about either portarlington to sandy or sorrento to sandy and get the yatch club involved. they have all the xperience/ saftey gear /boats and a large number of corporate members.(sponsorship) They also are backing kiting even though its not an olympic sport.
Plus we could get a news paper involved having two starting points would give us heaps of flexability on the wind direction and its about the same distance. We could call it 3 days before to get people set to go and the boats ect in place. I think it would be great for kiting and also good for melbourne.
look at the light house to leighton. Its always over booked.
Maybee Richard Branson will come down. Ill give him a ring!!!!
hey cesarphysio for flyers and brochures i use Boost Printing they have been even cheaper than vista print i have found. my contact there is Bryant
bryant@boostprint.com.au
on another note i have not kited around Sorento before is there a decent launch area? it looks like there may be a big turn out.
