After hearing about this in a previous thread i thought id do some research....
http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/314583/StKildaHarbourConceptPlan.pdf

Found this concept plan for the marina extension.....

What are your thoughts?

StKilda is already a nightmare with the number of kiters there. This is going to make it so much worse.

Not against the existing Pier being redone, but why put another pier right in the middle of the kiddie pool. Surely there is another location they could do it.

Hey they have considered the kiters and left some space, see the second last page
Maybe if they put some PVC pipes on the edge it can be used as a slider.

Yup. They've zoned out kiting in all the other areas and now they're taking out the only area zoned for kiting.

I see comments are closed already. Did the KBV get a chance to submit comments?

calling KBV

any thoughts/ideas/input in terms of one of the most frequented kiting spots in Melbourne and keeping the access open.

fairly big changes afoot.

couldn't quite work out what was in the various stages.

it reads as proposed and I think it would need to be passed through local council. will probably also be an appeal process.

we could just tell council the plans have been sponsored by jeep, a sure fire way to stop it....

I'm not sure what you guys are on about ??? The pier / dry dock is not in the kiddie pool at all it's much closer to RMYC.....
I can only see positives .... Much more flat water both in the kiddie pool and extending down past the main beach. The angled wall extending out to sea at the end of the new breakwater and the wave Attenuator angled towards shore will in effect create a flat water area extending past the current instructor area.

Yeh i can understand the more flat water.... but the othere thing thats going to become a big problem is boat traffic.
Windy days mean sailing boats coming in and out of marina.
Also other boats mooring off from pontoon.... like that fcken **** yellow sailing boat that should be sunk to its grave where it belongs, mooring would cost more then the boat itsself!

just my $0.02 worth...

Yachts really do need to be kept out of rough seas while being moored - given that the breakwater was built for the yachts....

Have you considered that there is the *whole of the Bay* to sail in? Why is there such a fascination with trucking along next to a pier, when there is some wave riding only a few hundred metres away.

You sure????

Earthworks company says specialises in "pier extensions"...............

Also has timeframe of completed by 2014.

I would say directly related.

hahah. that was quite strange the other week seeing the new blue north flying by its 5th line upside down off the top of the yellow boat.

there was some big earth moving equipment. was tempted to ask them to dig out some of the kiddy pool - to help when it is low tide.......

Looks like that is exactly where the pier will be coming from.

Looks like the rocks are there to create a groin similar to what is currently there. Hopefully wont have to much effect.
Temp fencing is a worry for any one that drops there kite.

BUT where else can the less challenged show off their skills???? Sure flat water is great but performiong in waves is the great challenge..... DOnt forget that our sport is now olympic - why not join in when Royal Brighton YC and Sandringham YC host real course racing.... That is a real skill thing

so does anyone know what the impact is going to be - either at the end or during. Looks like a road and also rocks are being placed right in the middle of the pond.

Does it also mean that the space upwind of kiddy pool will no longer be available to kite in?

Build a pier is a quite simple process, just a heap of poles and some rocks.
Hopefully the barges that are going to be working there are not going to be positioned too much in the way.
Im assuming they will be doing dredging at some point also, so hopefully works in our favour....

So they have created a sand bar across the front of the kiddie pool today.

It's was fun to kite in behind it today although not quite enough wind.

I should have taken a photo.

What gear were you running, must have been a big kite and board combo?

I kited in their for maybe 15 mins- 11 metre C4 and 136 NHP- was alright for a bit of unhooked, but would have been better with a bit more...

On a side note, People who struggle to stay upwind, now more than ever need top keep out of the kiddie pool- the area has effectively been halve ( I'm referring to the shallow flat water area) so space is at a premium, also margin of error is a lot less, and imagine the fallout if someone wraps their kite around an Earth mover...

After you left i went and grabbed a race board from thezu for a play.... Was kind of fun.

Then about an hour later it picked up enough to jump back on the twintip and I was jumping the sand bar.

I'm not surprised you packed your 11 up, There was only just enough for my 14m.

Plenty of wind for the race board! Those things really get going once you point ya toes and get the board flat.

Will be interesting to see how the sand bar looks tonight, will try and take a photo.

If anybody is after a light wind kite, I'm selling a 15m slingshot rev at the moment, it's in great condition for its age. I replaced with 14m RPM,it's been sitting in TheZu for ages. $399 with bar/lines

We will not be able to kite there if boats/ ferries are cruising in and out, not to mention the decreased space. What about allocated space for kiting behind existing breakwater instead of more boat (car)parks

We should protest this. Why should a few rich wankers get to NOT use their boats all year at the detriment of a thriving sporting community.

That pool is also a joke. Why would you use a pool next to storm water drains. The council and Melbourne needs to re-assess the value it puts on the bay. Its a disgrace.

Sydney turned around the quality of Sydeny harbour in the 90's and now has thriving fish/penguin and sea horse colonies. St kilda still gets Syringes and raw effluent. ITS a DISGRACE.
