I was contacted by "desertyank" whos been looking at the forum for a while, he and a buddy have built some LLMinis (2).
I don't know where he is in the USA but a job well done John and welcome to the forum.

ok, here goes;

they are obviously based on the plans paul put out there, but i used recycled stuff from the garage. the main tube is 2" x2" , and the main axle is 1.5". since i dont know how to fiberglass, or do much with wood, i used alum for the seat. as you can see, the rig is set up for the windsurf sail with the windsurf outhaul, etc. will attach pics when i can. may try to cut a sail later.

rigs work well, and we have had them up to 33mph so far. we go to el mirage dry lake here in the los angeles area.

still tinkering......

Looks fantastic! I like the idea of the aluminium base, though might get a bit hot for your bum in summer
Would have helped to keep the weight down too.

thanks brett,

the black texture paint does make it kinda hot, but it's better than leaving it unpainted; that was like looking into the sun through a mirror....

Nice neat yacht Brett. The aluminium sheet tray is a great way of doing it if you are set up for working the material.

I would be a little concerned about the near raw edges of the aluminium. You might consider screwing or bolting light timber battens along the edges for the sake of user friendliness. Varnished they would look really good too.

P.S. I noticed you guys use a similar building fluid to us as well. With ours, we believe any more than 5 minutes in the sun, it becomes almost toxic.

What we have is these things made of polystyrene foam or wet suit material to protect the fluid from harmful rays.

landyacht; i'll take night courses to get the masters. i dont think i'm worthy of it yet.

maybe after i buils a class 5 ish machine. going to use an older 7.4m sail (windsurfer rigged again...) for starters. any suggestions for plans? i dont plan to race it in any class, just need to use up some supplies and the sail?!?!?!?!

Looks great John. As Cisco mentioned, one safety issue... put that tinny in a stubbie holder!!

ok thanks, i did have good luck with pauls mini plans....

gizmo also sent me a bunch of info, so hopefully i can make something work.

if i take a picture of my sail, could you guys try to give me some idea where to trim it? i have looked at the forums regarding sail shapes, but i'm just not comfortable with it yet.

Great job, really like the spped and ease in building an alloy seat. cant quite figure out what it is but I really like the look your seat gives the yacht, it just looks FAST! (sounds like its living up to its looks as well). Colour scheme is good too, got a name for the beast?

EDIT: As for building a class 5, are there plans/notes around on Promo girls cl5? Just in case the metalwork and/or alloy for the axles is prohibitive (sorry Landyacht, cant get my head away from the 'T' designs ).

Class5 specs are quite specific with materials and construction just keep that in mind. For example a fibre glass mast ex sailboard would put you outside the class rules.
What acess do you have to construction stuff.... welders, good or basic workshop, lathe, mills, drill press, what is your material supplies like, what do you like working in ?and all that stuff.
Do you want the design basic, med or complex?

HOME WORK: Here is a thought for sail shapes... have a look at things in nature like the wings of birds that fly/ glide well ie. seagull, eagle, albatros etc and what shape do they have?
What is the shape of planes that glide well ie. sailplanes/ gliders, then ask why are they like that?

Post a pic of the sail you were thinking of using flat on the ground and lets have a look at it.

Im also fan of straight axles.... and Aluminium scaff tube.

class5 mid 80's



Mini size yacht im working on ... but could be enlarged to class5 size

i have welders, and access to a small lathe, a good size mill, and will try just about anything as far as construction. we have easy (but sometimes pricey) access to materials here, if i cant scrounge it on my own.

i'm not in too big a hurry, so i have some time to research this a bit.

thanks for the future help on the sail gizmo, i will take pics when i get home.

edit: what are the advantages/disadvantes of the straight axle vs the 'y' frame?

Here are some but probably not them all.... (my thoughts only)

Straight Axles,
Easy to maintain wheel alignment +
Easy to build +
Harder to transport in 1 piece -
Often hard to find correct sizes for telescoping axles -
I like "clamp" construction type yachts (personal +)

Y Axles,
Looks fast +
Good suspension due to longer axles and torsional twisting +
Harder to mount a seat -
Easier to dismantle yacht for transport +
Harder to align wheels -
How do you know the wheels are aligned? - (personal hobbyhorse)

Looking at the seat with the pilot in it I think you are sitting in an ankle guilotine I would seriously consider removing that front section , and putting one on that extends to the front of the chassis and be wider and squarer. in a collision or capsize situation the feet would very likely get pushed towards the diagonal edge. if you collided with an object or your foot slipped off it would very likely get dragged onto that raised edge. there is certainly a need to put some kind of protective edge on that ally , maybe the press on stripping that older cars have on door trims.
my big concern is that it wouldnt be you , but some first timer jumping in your yacht

the other plans are for a FED 5 designed by Mike Hampton for the British federation back around 1990. you can buy the plans from the BFSLY? youd have to gooogle for that one , I dont know the link

There are plans for seagull promo on this site. you will need to use a language converter if you do not speak french(the are plenty of language converters on google)

You could possibly roll the edges which would have added advantage of strengthening the shape.
