Hi Folks,
Had first sail of new yacht with 26" wheels I made as per Vic & Paul.
Great result, went well on wet sloppy beach with light winds.
Yacht is my own take on what I've seen.
Now I see why you can't catch these with wheelbarrow wheels.........
That has come up real nice Bill What brand is the sail.
I have started a couple more wheels using 39mm wide rims, They look pretty good and look like weighing 2.5-3 kg complete with tire.
Cheers
Vic
perhaps what we mean is that we were rather busy raising families and stuff.
keeping in mind that landsailors are a bunch of tight*rses wherever they come from, the ease we had in just buying wheels from a shop cheap has to be a major factor. plus seeing landyachting fade away in places like NZ with friends there blaming the cost of wheels and fancy bodies.
The past experiments we have done havent been that successful, and Vics recent breakthrough of using bike rims inside the wheel body has just lifted the cloud of mystery on the whole process.add the availability of off the shelf tyres and we all start getting enthused again
It is nice to be playing again though
Paul's got the point with the26" wheels - I didn't want to upset the whole scene of landsailors here years ago by building them in isolation & basically going beyond what folks could (or wanted to) do here - Pacrim was always limited to 20"
I'm glad that others have taken up playing with this style of chassis / wheel combo now, as I've been wanting to do this type of class 5 yacht for some years.
Vic, the sail is an Alegayter sail (local here) that I had made for Mini Vindi back in 2006 - with this yacht in the back of my mind.
The mast will need some sorting out - I'm using a windsurfer mast with whatever I could find shoved up it to make it stiff enough. Worked up to a point.
