I created a thread while David Rose and I were building this, but I thought I'd just put all the photos in one post from beginning to end...

Thanks for the advise. Where do I find "Test"? Do not see any posts from him on land sailing. Will I find him at another forum? Thanks again!

He's (David Rose) on here but as the president of ALSA and ALYC he doesn't post other than in the pictures. Email him at budrose@picknowl.com.au. If you're in SA I would recommend getting the plans from him as he was a great help when I was building mine. He can supply most of the tubes and also makes the fibreglass seats.

If you want to see them in action and meet him head along to Pt Gawler. The sailing timetable is in this post: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=33489

He owns a 2 seater and if you let him know you're coming he'll probably bring it out and give you a quick training session on it.

Bare with me for a couple of days I am busy scanning the original hand drawn A4 plans that Paul did in 1993. Once they are all scanned I will load them up and they can be freely used by all.

busy weekend for all but we knocked off early to scan the original PM plans. they should be available to down load early next week. it will be interesting for someone who has a later copy to do a comparison. At least people will have no trouble finding landyacht plans ever again

Just a quick question.. does the "Y" axle work better than a "T" axle....why?
does it give better suspension? and is it tricky to align the angles of the Y then the wheel stubs?

I can't really compare the two, but it is a bit tricky to align the axles on a "Y". To change the alignment you have to change the tilt of the wheel. I have a 10 degree slant, but that is because that is where the wheels are aligned. Initially I didn't have them tight enough and dropped off 2 wheels heavily and threw the wheel out of alignment. You can actually see this on the last photo above. The wheel is over far too much and visibly out of alignment. They're nice an tight now and it hasn't happened again.

The suspension is pretty good though, you can really feel it flexing, but I've never been in a "T" to compare it.

Now Hills and Landyacht have finished taking the mickey....

The original class 5 Pacific Magic plans are now uploaded to the sea breeze site under the articles section and are able to be downloaded and printed off for personal use.

Enjoy,

Well now I've seen them I can tell you my yacht was built from the original plans!! Only a couple of modifications were made and they included the plans for the layover steering, but other than that they were a copy of your document.

Thanks very much for posting them, hopefully we'll see some new Pacific Magics in the future. I can confirm that this is a great handling and performing yacht!!

dialogue following is purely opinion and speculation.
when i built the original PM It was after watching cl 5s sailing over really rough ground at the WC87 . When I attempted to sail across the same ground in my ECHO CL5 it snapped! it was the toughest yacht Id ever built. The fastest yacht in the fleet across this stuff was a German 5 (G331?) it had immensly swept rear axles and sailed over the "moon country" with ease. I wasnt the only person that noticed ,because the next year saw the introduction of the OTT style yachts that have dominated CL5 since. when I built the PM I tried the idea and it was just better than anything that Id ever sailed before. Mike hamptons take on the idea was the FED 5 which had much less axle rake. the current wave of PROMO yachts all follow the Fed 5 rear angles and though less comfortable than the PM I feel that they would be faster.
The downfall of thePM is probably the drop axles/ lowered chassis arrangement. Its the hardest and most complicated bit to get right and if I was building a PM Iwould build it all on a level then tilt the wheels at 10degrees if sailing on sand, and 5 degrees if sailing on good smooth salt.
at the end of the day it is smoother sailing with glass under your bot than steel.
( please begin disscussion now)

I noticed on Jeqs PMs they don't use the drop back axles and hence the yacht sits about 50mm higher. Would that have been done for rougher terrain. I was thinking about building myself a second set similar to his for the rougher ground as I constanly drag my bum on the ground over bumps or when I drop off 2 wheels.

Now I Understsand!!!! When we built the Pacific magic, we were missing some pages of the plans!!!! we did not use the drop back axles because we simply did not know that it existed!! Pure evolution!!!!

The plans that were a copy of the copy of anoher copy are at:

Here you may see some videos of our landsailers, the first one is from aday we
spent near Santiago in a place called "el convento" wind was around 40km/h.

This video is taken at pampa del leoncito (pampa of the little lion(puma)) 300 km from santiago across the border in Argentina. it was a windy day and we tested our
1sqmt sail. If you have the chance, we should meet at this place in the future!!.

And this video is from the first European Championship of Promo Class in
Bretteville, France ( Normandy)

Yes I noticed this. Amazingly with only half the information you came up with yachts that are almost identical to those built with all the plans pages.
Also given what poor quality the old photocopied/scanned pages were that you had to work with Juan I think we need to take our hats off to you for doing so well.

how about we pencil the tour of Andean landsailin venues in for late
2010 or early 2011 this gives us time to generate the desire to explore.
I'm still trying to work out that claypan I saw near the peru/chile border. It was huge .
congratulations for taking landsailing to South America . We are so proud of you all

Yeah! would it not be mystical and cool to sail an environmentally and culturally sensitive course on the Nazca plateau, (Nazca lines, Peru), prior to or after visiting Machu Pichu? Stuff of dreams!
(add here theme from that TV series; "doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo etc.")

Not far away is the SALAR De UYUNI with the town of POTOSI . Biggest salt lake on earth ,access from Bolivia , I think. Can we go there please! what are the chances JEQS?
