Been working again on a new yacht. Finished up the basic chassis, and thought I'd post a few pics... No name for it yet, but it will be painted red, since I have 4 cans of the stuff.

I decided to go with 20degree rear axles like the fed-5 after reading numerous posts here. The mast step gives me adjustments from 1100mm-1330mm from the center of the mast to the front axle. The main spine is very stiff, as I wanted the suspension to come from the axles, and the long front piece. Even without the seat on it, it feels nice and springy...

Tires are 10" scooter tires. Supposed to last a long time on even the roughest surfaces. They are also too big for the 'rope rule' mini's, but the guys run them in the mini class here in the states.... go figure....Wheels are jr dragster wheels.... Cheers

That's it for now! Gotta figure out the seat, and the steering pedals, which will attach to the tube hanging off the mast step.

I added some seat mounting tabs, and painted (it's almost 90 degrees F here, and dry) it. Not sure I like that particular red, but the price was right.

Laurie; note the official stickers..... went on before the paint was fully dried

Yup! I agree. Give some details please. Construction etc.
Ron

PS; I've been studying the Mast Step set up.. It is going to give you one Hell of a Range for fine tuning for different sails etc.. You probably should have at least a suit of 2 sails for the machine Light to medium Winds and Medium to Heavy/Speed Sail.

PSS; Just were abouts are you located Desertyank?? Western Australia, South Australia?? The soil there could be anywhere in rural mainland Australia but your Wife/Partner keeps a nice Flower Garden.

Well, i don't suppose the 'yank' in 'desertyank' rings a bell, does it?

I live pretty close to El Mirage dry lake, just east of Los Angeles county, in the US of A. I have 5 sails at the moment, and I plan on adding another one once I get an aluminum mast for the beast.

I will keep ya'all posted with pics.....

You are building some seriously sexy machines there DY. Great wheels on both the yachts too.

Get sails on 'em and post some vids, like yesterday.

Yo to all of the above.....what a top looking bit of gear, well done!
Those wheels are just the bee's knees.
I'm thinking I going to have to do a trip to the states...come back over loaded with goodies.
Have to get a passport...then get past your home land security.[}:)]

i would be looking to make a nice deep seat for your machine. maybe 300-350mm deep and recess the chassis into the base of the seat. make sure you lay down rather than sit up in it. it should centre sheet quite well. with the wider chassis and rear suspension you'll probably only need the 1 sail, 5-5,5m.
re the wheel size , the US mini rules are different again fro the FISLY ones, possibly to suit a wide range of manufactured yachts.
the emphasis seems to be overall weight rather than things like wheel specs

Yes DY I know that.. you too are going to have to learn the Subtlety's of my humor. I mentioned the Flower Garden and regarding the WA or SA location I was having a dig at your Lawn or lack there of

I am envious of your proximity to El Mirage, you lucky Stiff!(Perhaps you recognize that term)

I am planning on starting the seat tomorrow Not looking forward to it, since I haven't had any good luck with wood/fiberglass yet. As always, I will take some pics as things progress.... Deep sounds good, the sides of the beer-5 aly seat are nice and high as well, and the whole thing feels a little safer.

How does "MOJAVE MAGIC" roll off the tongue as a name for it?!?!

DY For those that are unfamilia with the pronunciation of that word. Mojave (Moharvy and bounce the H of the tonsils) is that correct??
sounds nice anyway Gila Monster (G sounds as a rough H) depending on its handling.

DY, on Schrodingers Cat seat I used 3ply, 2 layers, Glass between layers and also overlaid. Take your time and it certainly helps to create a couple of specialist tools to compact the Glass layers together. I make a metal disc type Roller with .5 inch tube spacers and washers on a bolt and a Wire Handle and one made from a large single disc to get into tight corners. Getting a good wetting of the wood base is imperative.the wood doesn't have to be strong as you get your strength from the Glass Fiber Matt. I used a single layer between the Ply layers and triple on the Outer Layers. Cloth laid first then Chopped Matt and another of Cloth on top well compacted together the Top Layer was laid diagonal to the first layer.. Hopefully this will help you.

I would suggest something along the lines of vics yacht"ugly"
But make the front wider as vics seat was too narrow. the rest was great and fitted well I shall try to find the photos. simple cable tie and fibreglassjoins would be fine as the seat isnt really carrying any load

I think you have got it there!!

I remember the guy's face in your avatar (looks like but is not Karl Malden). I am sure he was in TV cop shows. What is his name and can you post a You Tube link of his performance with that puppet??

Here is one I am sure you remember or will appreciate. Foster Brooks on the Dean Martin Show.

THAT was some funny sh!t !!!!!!!!!!!!

The guy in my avatar is Jim Backus. He is famous for Mr Magoo, Gilligans island, and a bunch of other stuff as well, including 'it's a mad mad mad mad world'

www.imdb.com/name/nm0000822/

I have never seen him with the puppet, But I'm sure he did some funny stuff!!!!!

Damn! I knew I knew the face. Watched all those show when I was a Lad.
Magoo, you've done it again. I'm pretty sure I've seen the Deano one as well, used to watch him religiously. always had a drink in his hand like Dave Allen.. Loved them both. Though in recent years I cam to dislike Martin for his sad attitude to Jerry Lewis.

New seat in progress. Kinda like the 'ugly' seat. It's wider at the front, tho, and the steering pedals fit well. Feels pretty comfy when you're in it, and it fits the mojave magic chassis OK.

It has a couple layers of epoxy/glass on it, needs to be sealed/sanded/painted, but it's getting closer. My first attempt at glassing something. I now have a new rule of thumb....." when in doubt, make a huge mess, and keep on adding to it!"[}:)]

Cheers!!

Looks pretty cool. A very neat finish for this seat would be faux red brick. I got the idea by looking at the rear left quarter of your seat that kind of looks like a brickwork pattern. Would look neat with the red frame and bonus...you won't have to finish as smooth.

I think I'll take a pass on the brick look. I don't know what color it will be, but most likely I'll just use whatever color(s) I have around. 'Perfection' is not going to be a name used to describe the finish either[}:)]

Keep the pic's coming DY. And don't be too concerned about getting called anal retentive.. It really is a sort of Back Handed complement, from me at least. You seem to have caught the Building Bug and with skills like yours---Why Not?

what is the diameter/wall thickness/type of the steel youve used for the rear axles?
not a bad effort for a first glassing project. when learning , getting comfy to tune the yacht is a good idea

The tubes are 1.5" chromoloy with .093 wall thickness. Pretty stiff stuff, but has a nice bit of flex too. We'll see

The seat feels pretty good, hopefully it will be good at speed too....

Im a great believer in diameter over wall thickness, the old axle stuff we used was1 7/8" then 50mm, now Im using 50mmin a 2mm wall steel.
I look forward to a performance report
