does anyone know where i can get hold of (borrow) a class 5 hi sided given mould to produce a hi sided given seat anywhere here in adelaide
i have a class 5 given now but would like the sides to be a bit higher as i'm a larger type person and find the small sided 1 a bit to small, if that makes any sence

Hi, it makes total sense to have higher sides, but there was never an alternate mould made specifically for the Given yacht. I think you will have to make your own.

yes there was i saw it sunday while out sailing at pt gawler but i didn't get a chance to ask the guy where he got it from and it was a moulded seat with no add ons, and it was a given as i have one and it was exactly the same except for being hi sided.

fraid' youll need to find ut from the owner. there were some interestng seats made by martin bell around 92 and then the PM seats in 93 but not much since then. If you could fit in it easily the its probably a MB seat

A word which you may have missed in my response was "specifically". The Given was actually a one design when Ron designed it, so an alternate seat would have meant it did not fit the rules. That was in 1986 and the Given 5 never achieved the hopes Ron had for it world wide.

like this. these are Faze 5 givens. a given seat on the much nicer chassis of a bill Finch faze 5.
Personally I found the seats were blooming uncomfortable as the didnt take into account the shape of a human. everybody needed some kid of fancy cushion . they were shocking on the clay at Ivanpah

Just be aware that some people don't take kindly to their work being "ripped off" so to speak, the person who made the original seat may have spent lots of $$$ and more than 100+ hrs on the plug, the mould and then the first seat, ask them first and give them credit for the work they have done.

Infact it's common place in some industries to put a lot of effort to try and stop others copying an idea or product. (like grinding part numbers off, adding hidden security codes etc.)
I remember my grandma sometimes missed out the odd ingredient when someone wanted a copy of her special recipes

I will agree on the uncomfortable bit, but I am not sure I can agree on the "much nicer chassis". Bill's were certainly stronger, aesthetically it's a no contest IMHO to Ron's. Performance seemed to come down to who was sailing. Of the close on 100's sold around the Pacific there seemed to me to be little performance difference between any. The arrival of my hand baggage Seagull in 88 stopped them in their tracks.

the only NZ chassis I saw was in 86 and was all in square ally . tad chunky

Yep, was 50mm square alloy, (by the way the 86 yacht was NOT a Winger as Ron hadn't finished the design when you were here). The bracketry etc was all not so heavily built as Bill's, and didn't fail. C bar steering etc. The only bit which did give up after a while was the bottom tie bars, which when they went up a size of tube to 3/4" gave no problems.
Wasn't Bill's main tube the same size except round??
