ok gizmo (and anyone else),

here is a picture of the sail. i lied about it's size, it's only a 6.7m sail.

the vertical lines appear to be straight, so they might be a good reference for the leading edge.

it doesn't matter what size it winds up at when its done either...

That sail looks like a good candidate for alteration to me
Plenty of info in the sailmaking section of this forum on how to go about it
If you dont want a super large sail you will only have to cut the luff and foot
If you want it larger you may have to add some thing to the clew area
to get the luff/foot angle around 70 degrees or so in my opinion
Landyacht on this forum is the man though He should be able to give you good advice
Good luck with it

can we put this discussion over in the sailmaking secton , please mr Hiils
That sail is pretty textbook , almost straight off the drawings in the hred in the sailmaking section.
you just need to decide on the boom style(wishbone or "traditional) and how long youare going to make it. your sailarea will be decided by the boomlength. I would go for 4.5m for the lighter winds on El mirage.
make recut that other sail as a stormy, for when the big cranking dust busters come through
