Hi there to all, my name is Andrew Bates and I sailed many years ago at Lake Lefroy Land Sailing Club in the early eighties and then on for the next twelve years.
As you see from my avatar my yacht would be over twenty five years old by now, how time marches on. Well I would like to inform everyone that I will be forming
LAKE JOONDALUP LAND SAILING CLUB over the next few months.
Up in the northern corridor of Perth there is very limited space to land sail so I will be focusing on Blokarts as a club standard. I have had talks with Phil Coulter from Surfers Paradise NSW who will be supplying blokarts to new members once things get rolling.
As I said it is very early days and I will be having talks to the local Shire of Joondalup to see how they can help with one or more venues for our new club.
If there are people interested in in land sailing north of the river please feel free to call me on 0412 464 335.
As things progress I will post further developments as they happen.
That sounds great.
Love that old blowcart in that avatar too, classic.
And now maybe all the rich buggyers have somewhere to go for a big weekend away in W.A.
Maybe race the blowcarts.
All the best,
Nas.
Great work Andy!! All the best with that, keep us updated
BTW put a post up on the www.blokart.com.au forum too. Philc runs it.
If I recall A10 was past her use by date I think Paul, she was made from 1" box tubing and was rusting from the inside out.
As quick as she was I would not like to be sailing her at speed and have her break apart.
So what happened to her wing mast and axle in the end Paul?
Gidday Andy,
Good luck with starting a joondalup club, I will call you later and chat for a while!
We are building a mini land yacht based on Pauls lake lefroy design-but with suzuki 10" wheels (and I want to build a couple of proper lefroy minis too)- aiming at having a bit of fun on local ovals and carparks- but if a local club starts up I would really be interested.
We live in wanneroo, and before I flew back to the mine last week I spoke to the wanneroo shire rangers about getting access to any dried up lakes in the shire- and they were not very encouraging.
I know there were a couple of shallow lakes in the area that tend to dry up in the summer months due to the water table dropping from all the water being used for irrigation and metro water supply, and I was hoping to get access- but the shire attitude was that we might cause damage just getting to the lake- let alone damage to the lakebed itself, When I mentioned that the landyachts are lightweight usually around 30kg or so and should not cause any real damage they didnt really want to know.
It seemed that it was easier to just say no- and prevent any future extra work for themselves.
Catch you later
G'day Andy B,
How's it going, haven't seen you for a long time..
A 10's mast, sail ended up on Ray Potter's sanderling, which is now owned by Lindsay Bawden. It hasn't been sailed for a few years, but remains in good condition.
Haven't done much sailing for a bit but looking to do more this year.
Cheers
just building the giant roof rack for the International Eucla Beach Expedition, Bill, How are your preperations coming along?
Also started cutting out the panels for a 5.5m version of the FOXTROT VELA sail. we're planning on taking a PROMO ,a mini, and a BLOKART. We have a new team member arriving early next month, Bastjin Demusyere. hes going to work for me ,and get some sailing in at the same time.
Hi Guys, thanks for all your support, thought I would fill you in on what is happening so far in Perth.
I have secured a dealership with Blokart Australia for the entire Perth Metro area with the help of Phil Coulter.
I have 4.0m pro and a shadow seat and a 5.5m sail for light winds,I have another yacht being delivered for my Son Ben which will arrive next week.
I have managed to secure a permenant sailing venue at Belmont Park race course so there are three to four yachts sailing there on Sundays.
Looks like Lake Joondalup Land Sailing Club is going in the right direction, the idea still is to build up members and then approach the shire of Joondalup to create a permenant venue for us(you got to think big)this is why I am holding on to the name L.J.L.S.C.
I hope to make it to Yeppoon in March but will have to see how business goes first after Christmas.
Congratulations on the dealership Andy and especially on that sailing venue.
If you get some regular attendance to that site by a few blokarters you will probably make more money selling tyres than blokarts.
When I get to sail on those types of surfaces, I can almost see the rubber peeling off in the power turns.
A good 4 hour session on that surface and you can pretty well write off a pair of rear tyres.
I have a spare pair of rear wheels fitted with the "Deestone" 5" wide tyres that I use on bitumen and concrete. There is a sacrifice in performance due to the extra weight and poor balance in the tyre but the tyre and the rubber compound are a lot tougher so they will outlast several pairs of the standard "Deli" tyres.
They are not real easy to scource and tend to be quite expensive through normal tyre retailers. Ride on mower shops carry them. Some sell the "Enmach" plastic mower trailers which are fitted with the wheels and tyres which are available as spare parts from "Enmach". The "Enmach" factory is actually here in Bundaberg.
They buy the wheels from a factory in Whangerai, NZ, which I think is where blokart wheels are made. These wheels are the same as the older blokart wheels and will fit straight on to your blokart stub axles and bearings.
Hope this is useful info for you. Cheers Cisco
P.S. Can't wait to try the venue when I eventually get over to the West.
