I got 3 broken/old sails in various stages of disrepair.

Can any off you guys make use of them?

They are in Rockingham, WA and they are FREE.

Are they still around?
I'm in Esperance and would have to organize to have them picked up.

you might want to take your mobile No off you post before the salesmen find it

Hey ta for that.

Yeh, there is an up coming event "Festival of the Wind" in Esperance in mid March and the Pink Lake fire brigade are helping out. I am hoping to build some sort of land yacht and have a crack and let others try it out in this fun event.
I have taught my self to kite buggy in the last 12 months, but I'm no sailor
(I get sick crossing a wet lawn). I have never, tried a land yatch.

I have been checking out this forum and it's fantastic, lots of good info.

I think the theme in March is recycled materials as much as possible.
I'm just trying to get a mast and sail before I commit to a build.

Thanks for the offer of assistance, No doubt I will have questions along the way so, cheers for that.

we have a few sails waiting for recutting at the momentand I reckon one of leftfields sails might be in the qeue. I will have a look in jan when i pickem up from the sister in law and put a good one aside for you.
do you have a windsurfer mast to hand as pete left one with me in kalgoorlie for recycling so there is one here for you. I would really recommend have in a look at a basic Lefroy mini. It would be ideal for pink lake and the beaches out at legrand , thomas river etc. we sailed at LeGrand a couple of months ago and it was just too much fun. the mini was perfect
. let me know any bits you need , I really need help clearing out the shed[}:)]

Hi, that looks like the beach to the base of Cape le Grande in the photo.

I had scans on my shoulder today, where I got ejected from my buggy 3 weeks ago and the tendon is ripped off. Surgery sometime for me. What a knob!!!!
So 6 weeks holiday in front of me and a dodgy shoulder, so going to need a project now.
I have a well equiped shed. I build fire trailers for FESA and general fabrication.
I built my kite buggy and it has 8"x 8" Sysmic rims with 21" Big Foots. So I love to tinker.

A mate thats leaving town, has a one piece carbon mast that I'm going to pick up tomorrow morning. So just the sails to sorce.

I will study the basic Lefroy mini in the meantime.

Give me a yell if your heading south again. There is always a beer in the fridge.

Well I picked it up and it turns out to be a, 4650mm Serfiac one piece fibreglass mast (what is left of the sticker on the bottom) reads something with the remainder of the word "......ale Wave 99" The rest has been rubbed off.
Also scabbed 2 ride on lawn mower rear wheels that are the smooth (No tread) turf type.
So game on!!!!

ride on mower wheels tend to be heavy, when compared to a 4"x8" wheelbarrow or even a 6x8. whatever you build keeping the weight down is critical, if you get too heavy you will end up with a 3 wheeled beach chair
given what you build , i think we can assume youd be building 2 minis at a timebefore lunch

Hi Chook and Paul,

If you need another mast I recently picked up a couple from balcatta, and some more sails.
Various types of mast both single and 2 piece, the sails I havent unrolled yet to see what size or condition.

If you are interested email me, maybe we can do some horse trading?

this evening when it cools down a bit I will head to the shed and unroll the sails and get out the masts for photos etc.

I dont know what happened-probably I hit the wrong button again but some of the photos dissapeared- but they can all be seen on my profile page- (top 2 lines of photos)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

photos of masts and sails that are excess to my needs-
some of the sails are ready to use with a standard windsurfing boom (no.2, 5 and 7), and some others have damaged lower sections and would be good for recutting to suit a regular lake lefroy mini landyacht type boom.

in the photo of the masts, the closest 2 1/2 masts are for trade.
the shorter lower section needs a reinforcing wrap of fiberglass at the joining section but otherwise is good.
the yellow 2 piece mast has been given a coat of resin as when I got it there were some loose fibers on the surface. I havent used it yet.

photos of sails no.4 and 7 went missing somewhere in cyberspace.

no. 4 is a Sailworks 4.1 revolution- bottom panel has some delamination- suitable for recutting.

no.7 is a Gaastra 5.7 speedfoil. good to go.

They look the goods. sn

My daughter graduates 22nd Jan, so I will be driving to Perth for this.

Whenever it's cool I've been plugging away (and a litter of Lefroys are developing).
Thanks for your time on the phone Paul, a very informative yarn.

They are dangerous to build as mates turn up with nectar and construction turn to destruction. Were having a fat time though.

I pestered the local bearing supplier and he's a fallshaw agent so when everything gets back to normal in the new year he's going to get me some prices.
I see what you mean about the "Bundlings" variety. Nasty bearings eh???

Thanks fellas ,will talk soon,
Chook

what can I say fellas....

I have been called a magpie by many people over the years, and mum tells me it runs in the family

I just make a point of visiting balcatta at some point during my rdo's from the mine, and there is usually something to smuggle back home

I have been trying to find a kids electric scooter at balcatta, and using the motor as the basis for a small electric winch as my hands are giving me some grief with stuff like hanging on to ropes, but the only one I found looked like the smoke got out of the wires, and it might have been a bit hard to put it back in!

with the amount of gear that turns up at balcatta it shouldnt be long before I find a goodun!

CHOOK- JUST GOT YOUR MESSAGE- PHONE CALL COMING YOUR WAY SOON.

Ok sn look forward to it.

On the winch set up, how about the electric window drive motor out of a car.
These have a heap of grunt and I've used them for activating all sorts of equipment. Even with the arms still fitted they are very powerfull and easy to get.

Just a thought.

Ive got a nice 24v one here if you want it, have you considered a rachet block?

chook- I hadnt even thought about a window motor! any idea of approximate dimensions and weight?

Paul- I thought a scooter motor might be easy to convert as I could swap the chain driven wheel for a simple spool and use spectra (?) rope.
then mount the whole setup in the gap between the floor and the seat- using a body similar to the "Green Arrow"

(and I wouldnt know a ratchet block if I tripped over it )

hows a ratchet block work?

the hassle with my hands is osteo arthritis kicking in- giving me grief hanging onto ropes and general manual handling. quack has me popping lotsa pills, no more cortisone jabs allowed- and he advises me getting my right wrist fused (which I am putting off as long as possible.

Hi sn, Good to catch up.
I thought I had a motor under the bench. If it's there it's hiding!!!!
The motors are from memory about 50mm across and 80mm long plus the transmission. This would make it roughly 150mm long in total. The ones out of older cars work on a curved rack and pinion so the arm has a lot of power. A wrecking yard may be worth a try to see the different sorts.
A 6 pack of nectar, got me 4 different ones when I was building a grain cleaner some years ago. They were used to regulate shutes and outlets from the ground.

Getting off the track here but I'm like that. I don't mind a yarn.

Keep safe in 2011 everyone.

I use one on my kite fishing reel (it takes 2 kilometers of line) it pulls it in with fish attached with no problems from over a kilometer out, so they have plenty of grunt.
Cheers
