OK I'm new here and I'm looking at building a mini that Pauls been posting

Now I'm looking to move to Hervey Bay in the next couple months

My question is where can sail my boat? (may be Fraser Is)

Also if your reading this could you please post your favorite sailing spot

Thanks Adrian

G'day Adrian
The absolute "bestest" beach for you that is relatively close by, is Farnbourough beach here in Yeppoon. Yeppoon is about 4 hours? from Hervey Bay, might be a bit closer from H/Bay than Bundie. The beach is 12 miles long, good solid sand and very easy to get to. I think I would give Frazer Is. a miss, it's very expensive to get there and permits are needed. . Once you get there, you have to drive across the island to reach the sandy beaches. For less than half the travel time and only fuel costs, you can go to Bangalee (the entrance onto Farnbourough Beach) and if you should suffer a serious mishap, the hospital in only about 15 mins away, depending where you are on the beach.
If you can squirell away a fishing rod on the S/Y, you can have a go at the dart, trevelly, flathead, bream and whiting at the mouth of Corio Bay. You can also drive up to the bay on the gravel road from the resort. All of which is very easy to get to, (take a yabby pump).
Cisco has a few good beach areas that he inhabits and he will give you the good oil on these places. However, Bangalee is the best and there are very few people there to get in the way. If you should come up this way, send me an e-mail.

Hi Adrian, Kody is right on the mark about Farnborough Beach. If you have a choice of Hervey Bay or Yeppoon, I would take the latter any day.

There are very few, if any, places at Hervey Bay where you can land sail successfully. Most beaches appear to be ideal surfaces but need a northerly wind. Good northerlies are a rarity on the Qld coast.

Bundaberg is an hour and a half north of Hervey Bay and Yeppoon is four hours north of Bundaberg. Fraser island is a logistical and legal nightmare for land sailing so I would not even contemplate it.

We have a few places here in Bundy that are reliable for land sailing but it not as windy here as one would expect. In reality I suppose we get about a dozen good sailing days in per year. But they are really good days!!!

If you are moving to the coast in Queensland and you want it to be a place where landsailing is handy there are three places. Bribie Island just north of Brisbane, Yeppoon near Rockhampton and Mackay. There is a strong group of blokarters in Mackay who now have a registered club and they are very friendly people there.

If I was not so well established here in Bundaberg I would be moving to Yeppoon. Land sailing and yachting in general is very good there. Rockhampton is a large city with a jet airport and combined with Yeppoon would have a population of around 200,000. Employment is strong there, it being a gateway to the coal mining areas inland. Because of that though real estate is quite expensive. It is all relative.

EDIT:-Generally the further north you go in Qld, the stronger the winter south east trade winds are. Also the central Qld coast (Yeppoon to Mackay) has the biggest tidal ranges in Queensland.

I hope this is of help for you. Cheers Cisco.

My brother who is a member of the Mackay "Bucasia Beach Blokarters" just told me he's put up a youtube video of their trip down to Yeppoon on the Queens' birthday weekend. They travelled 20 kms north along Farnborough beach - obviously a perfect sailing venue as Kody maintains!

Due to a severe lack of sleep Cisco wasn't present until the closing scenes. He was the rugged one wearing only a red polo shirt, blue shorts, dunlop volleys, MSA Nullabor specs and MSA Rodeo gloves.

Many thanks to the Mackay crew for coming down and making it such an enjoyable occassion. They now understand what I have been raving on about when I have sung the praises about Farnborough Beach, Yeppoon on this forum a few times before.

Of particular note here, for those that have watched the video and may be trying to figure out the beach:- The tidal range on this beach at times exceeds 4m. This weekend it was around 2m, with the high on Saturday at noon and 1pm on Sunday. We were able to sail the beach ALL DAY.

ALSO when the afternoon seabreeze came in it was striking the beach at around 80 degrees. If anybody knows of a beach as good or better than that which does not need a survival pack to get to please tell us about it.

The Keppel Bay Sailing Club hosted the "Sabot Nationals" this weekend as well. The aforementioned club also has one of the best $13 buffet dinners you could ask for too.

See y'all on Farnborough Beach. Cisco

Some pics of the weekend. First one is Big Joe (Kody) after his first couple of runs on the beach. It took about another hour and a half to get my kart back.

What do you mean it was an hour and a half before you got the kart back??? It was just ten little minutes
The real truth is, you were very fortunate to get it back at all!!!
Good Heavens! are these things adictive or what???
Many thanks once more to Cisco and all the guys. I had a fantastic time and cant wait to get my yacht finished. Lets see now, more wind + bigger sail + less body weight equals more speed!!! Now where did I put that diet sheet?

Kody (is hooked)

You were only half the size I expected! . At least you can see now that you dont need a giant yacht . with your body frame size a mini with about 4.5m would be plenty
Pauls right again . Now go home and get on with the buildingor the windy weather willl be all over for another year
