with all the "good " yachts somewhere on the high seas, ive had to look around the shed for bits to get a yacht going for september. little stig was easy , a quick repaint inspired by the tall ships and shes off
.

shes been mproving her sailing by taking out my old class 5 which has had the steering adjustment improved to a full 600mm of movement

Ive patched upa sail from 1991! it only needed a rebuild of the head, the foot, the leach and the 37 small holes. bizzarely with the 26" wheels ,a 16"front and new sheeting, it feels like a really nice machine to sail

Josephine is happy with a retuned and repainted Green Arrow
heres a new mini thats been launched last week, bloomin' beautiful and a delight to sail
''
it goes by the name of "old Farts Folly"
meanwhile Ive dug through the graveyard and managed to squeeze my fat old belly into this classic body from 2004

managed to turn the pink box into a kind of mini over the weekend, with 25mm wooden axleand hand steering as my feet had no room to steer.
trying to get a sail together this week , but customers keep ringing the mobile

Interesting steering head angle..... Is that to make it an easier push/pull due to the hand steering? Or because the chassis is up so high?

it was too tight trying to get a steering linkage into the box, that front end is simply set up with the steering head set down to the point of contact. theoretically I can the get away with a small tiller. with 20mm shaft for the bearings theres no need for a 2 sided fork

I finally realized this should be in the construction section, too late now.
Its all finished, last night I finished the 5.0m sail , cut from a neil pryde world cup6.0.

last night it took 3 brews for the painters inspiration to kick in, I figured if you cant stand out , try to hide in the herd lil stig wasnt impressed, but next day it had blended n so well , TP1 was able to hide in the thing

with the rig mounted she looks like a scary beast to sail, but I feel like I could have my weight back a fair bit, which would mean climbing out of the yacht whilst sailing
perhaps gizmo could grace us with a Cof E diagram. ( Ive already marked it on the sail, its scary)
any suggestions for a name?

There you go Paul... the red lines have dissected the sail to give the centre, the yellow line is about 1/4-1/3 from the leading edge which is the aerodynamic lift line.
The white circle is where the effective CE would be... this is just behind the back wheel contact point. On salt (because of the surface) it should be fine, but a mast step that has no rake making the mast more upright would move the CE a little further forward giving a better balanced yacht.

the whole set up with sheeting separate from down haul , and hand steering takes some getting used to , but the tiller needs to be longer, so that a chop up job tommorrow, managed 1 capsize trying to sort it all out, which in this body of a yacht meant about 3 minutes to climb out. the big sail (5m) seemed really happy even when the wind was up, but i will put something inside the body to push mu feet against ,to get the body weight back.
meanwhile , Ive finally got the balance right on the raggeddy old class 5. with this set up i was able to sail , and tack on the claypan using the front wheel as an aelieron(?), a rather bizzare feeling with the front wheel only occasionally touching down

The old yacht looks good. Don't know about that setup for Wallungup I think you will take more trips into the bush than I did (had 4kg on the front wheel and had no way to get around the airstrip end of the lake when the wind was up)

I keep thinking that too , but it just seemed to do the job on the clay at the ened of the day a quick tweek of the boom would tack the yachtwith barely a touch of the steering.
perhaps its all to do with the tyre pressures?

my apologies for not letting you guys know when it was on.
we were supposed to be episode 3, but got bumped to the first.
ABC2 sunday night is the repeat , or on Iview( Do Or Die, the goldfish bar)
We didnt know that they worked together, but tattoo boy was a bit of a to**er
ben the barman was a really friendly , helpful bloke, Id give him a job,
when they headed out onto the lake , he had a leaky tyre, and got left behind till we fixed it.
got to hand it to them all the walked all the distances they claimed on the show, and by following the tracks out It was probably 4X the distance.
what I ddid find interesting was that the route on the last day was one that Id run through with the producers, who then relayed to the "expert",
when he relayed it to the group the law of chinese whispers meant a significantly l harder walk, and they walked within 150m of a cool dam chockers with yabbies, without even noticing

Well I'm flat out trying to get the "Lefroy fleet" together as well.
The mini is ready.
The class 5 is ready.
The kite buggy is close and just needs some more belt work. (waiting on parts)

Got to this stage with the noise generator tonight.

Just got the fuel piping and valves to sort out. I've fitted the new engine mounts, a few minutes ago.
Didn't think the string would last too long

From watching the Scrap Heap Challenge video you'll need a heat shield at the back of your bonce! Apart from that I cannot wait to see this video footage She's looking nice and tidy and ready to roll!

Cheers Col

Yeh Col, there will be a full heat shield from the top bar (over my head) to the bottom of the chassis forward of the bottle as well.
This will protect from the both extremes, the intense heat and the icing on the cylinder.[}:)]

It's just a curiosity project and won't be running for long anyway.

I'm trying to find out who was the last person to run a jet powered vehicle on Lake Lefroy, as there isn't much in the way of records that I can find online..

anyway....... back to the shed.

Oh by the way an interesting bit on wheel bearings made for 1000 kmh.

Haha
The last time I was doing 1000kmh was at Easter this year on a "red eye flight" Perth to Brisbane on a 767. Chating to one of the cabin staff he enquired for me and said we had a 190 kmh tail wind.

Hey Paul when do we have to watch the tele tomorrow to see it?
I can't seem to be able to find it.

Probably not DY if you can use a Computer and have the net.. Mind you from my perspective it is only a TV Series of the kind I detest. Morons competing against Morons.. The best part was about 20 seconds of Land Yachting and that was broken and over Edited..
It seems to me the people in that series would die in the Desert if left to their own devices..
Ron
Sorry you guys over in the West but typical of TV and Movie people the Land Yacht was just a device to test human cohesion..

I was going to make a couple of points on this subject regarding Terminal Velocity. My thoughts were very Myopic and short sighted/Overly symplistic.
It all becomes very complicated so suffice to say..

Did you add the thrust of the jet into your calculations? After all, he would not be relying on gravity and tail wind alone!
