a possible trip to lake gilles on the june long weekend is in the planning depending on the weather and rain fall between now and then, if the lake is out then a stop over in port augusat is on the cards to give the clay pans try if they too are dry enough... more information will be posted as the weekend gets closer on here and also on facebook on the Adelaide land sailing face book page ( nothing to do with the ALYC) this is my own land sailing page on fb
It is about time someone got a Bright Idea.... A Light moment and uploaded some pic's into Google Earth of PLaces Like Lake Gilles, The Salt Pans near Woomera. Lakes Gardinair and Lefroy, photo's of Land Yachting. I thought that is what these pages are about.... Landsailing????
Ron
Dang! That is a Hell of a wide Beach! Where is it?? Seriously that is a pristine piece of Salt. That Phot is worth uploading to Google Earth. Half yer Luck! Out of curiosity; What is Gairdiner like as a Land Yacht Venue??
Ron
Adeliade to Pt Agusta...285+ ks 342.98 o NNW
Pt Agusta to Lake Gillies...82+ks 72.06 o WSW
Goggle Earth....so about 370 ks total maybe 4 to 4.1/2 hours
and 60ks = 40 miles, 100 ks= 60 miles, thereabouts
thanks Ly,
That is interesting to know, as I was of the belief it was salt. I called by a Salt Lake on the way back from Darwin back in 2000, somewhere near Woomera I believe and it appeared to be salt with preserved insect life in it. Now I know what it is made up of.
pity I can't make it over to one of those lakes for a session.. Life.
Ron
lake gairdner is not as flat at gilles i've been up there on speed week, and it's a bit more difficult to get to as some of it is on private property, on speed week they use a grader from a near by sheep station to grade the top of the lake as it gets a lot of little ridges on it, of the two gillies is by far the better for land sailingand it's easier to get to as well, i'd say it was a bit further than 4 hours to the lake from adelaide thought maybe 5 1/2 to allow a shot stop over in port augusta.
Thanks Guys,
the more I hear of Gilles the more I like the sound of it but I am not taking my Rodeo out on any Dry lake bed. No Sir.
You never know, I may manage to put a couple of bucks away and make it over there. I hope so and then it would be nice to do that when there a few bodies going there for a run as well.
Ron
rodeos are great on salt, I drove one for 3 years ON lefroy, no body or chassis rust, the only thing that fell off was the after market tray, the whole thing, loaded with samples, on a bend in the main road
This is the second Rodeo I've had. Both were 3 years old when I got them, Travis has the first one. Both are close to 300,000 and still going fine and very little in the way of mechanical work on them. My one has a set of Spark Plugs with about 200,000 on them. BLOODY Great Vehicles.
Ron
Nick...rum ......get overhere to Lake Gillies, it will do you good
Just slip intoa tazzy tourist agency and spend some of that 2 headed
coin you have stashed under the swag. then hop on a tazzy fairy
headed for the mainlend. Grab your aged/senoors pennyshion
an spend $ 59 single oneway to Hadlaid. Hitch hoike up to Port Agguta
assemble your landyacht and sail west for 2.5 hrs.....your there.
Yeah! Muzza,
I've been thinking along those lines.. It could happen but I will have to stop spending $$$ on other Crap first. I'd love nothing better to shoot across Gilles at a great rate of knots.
Ron
I only know where it is and how to get there nick. Like you I am a speculator
and would like to wizz up there, have a bash. but that is a seemingly impossible this year
unless i get a spit in lotto, or maybe a vomit!!!!
[
Yeah Muzza,
How well do you know lake Gillies??? Wind Wise.. I am looking at the best time of the year to travel to such a time to be assured of a couple of speed runs and sailing..
Ron
check out the wind rose data at the BOM website for Kimba. that should be pretty close. you would probable get some great hot northerlies in summer.
Thanks for that Paul, however I'm not familiar with "Wind Rose Data"?
Nothing happening over your way this weekend??
Ron
Gidday Port, could you please supply the Goggle Earth co-ordinates of the
area you have camped at on Lake Gillies?
Co-ordinates for the campsite are
S 32 48 303
E 136 49 047
We got up there saturday afternoon but with only 2-4 knots of wind we waited. After the sun went down the wind came up to around 8-10 knots and we got 1.5 hours of twilight/night sailing in.
Definitely worth going to. I am going up on the June long weekend as well
Keep us posted on Gilles and lots os pic's' any info regarding best times of the year for good winds etc will be greatfully accepted.
Ron
So thanks for those co-ordinates, That all being so, what is the best
approach to that spot, is it about 22ks past Iron Knob on highway
then at 32.52. 83 S.... 136.59.39 E leave main rd and follow fence
line for about 17ks to lake shore. Is 4wd absolutely needed of not .
Is there other ways in maybe better. Any truthful comment would
be helpful. What time will others participating arriving up there.
Its tight along the fence line because the track isnt kept clear. there is one section where you have to drive off a steep kopi ridge, the back up on the way out. you can do it with care in a 2wd, but not if its wet.
the hardest part is spotting the turn off . it is almost camoflaged, we didnt spot it when we drove past twice in feb.
A windrose is a graph which shows winddirection, strengths, and frequency for a given site.
look up the BOM, click on wind roses, state, nearest town, voila
