hi im rick.
just a few questions about the height of landyachts, i know you guys sail on salt lakes and beaches but where im looking at sailing are farmers paddocks with at least 150mm stubble on them,
do the yachts need to be that low, im 100+kg surely a bit higher wouldnt make that much difference.

Hi Rick,
It is all about Center of Gravity. The Higher the C of G the less stability and so the easier it is for the Wind to tip you on your side. I would have thought that 200m would be a ton of clearance. What are you using for wheels and how rough is the paddock?? Take these into account as you build and keep on asking questions. Reckon we will get you there in the end.

so if you have a rig 100mm lower wouldn't that be equal to raising the yacht for ground clearance.
how could you get 200mm ground clearance from 400mm wheelbarrow wheels, you would need to allow for the axle.

Welcome Rick.
Have a look at the LLMini plans it would probably fit your needs if you didn't do the saw cuts for the drop axle. It should give you enough lift to get above the stalks.

My suggestion for a sail would be 5m or a bit more (for med / light winds) cut to a fuller shape to give a bit more grunt on a soft surface.

gizmos right. just build you rear chassis flatand re-align your steering headat the same height.
to do the steering head simply drawthe whole front end full size on a sheet of ply or chipboard or ply, with the height set at the same as the rear.
that peice of wood becomes a valuable tool

Rick,
What do you intend to build?? A lake Lefroy Mini ? Like Paul says Don't bother Cutting and shutting the Axle just run it as a through Beam. What will happen is that the wheels instead of angling in at the top will be upright. Working at the Wheel Dia Height less half the axle thickness Make the Chassis Tube Level and adjust the Steering Head Tube in accordance to the Front Wheel Dia. If Close up pic's are required to Help with your build do not hesitate to ask.

What is your Engineering knowledge like?? Do you have any local help?

Paul, When raising the Chassis by a couple of inches that would extend the Steering head length by a couple of inches or raise the angle of the fork SH to Wheel. What would Ricks best bet in this be?? if not for his use then for any newbie reading this Post?

That is a Carbon Fiber through Beam under 100KG load Axles are angled in their mounts.

thanks for the info guys, im probably looking at the mini plans that are on the forum but without the drop axle now knowing its do-able.
welding skills would be ok as i wasnt bad with a welder when i was living on the farm.
i suppose its about getting the things together, the seat and sail might be a challenge but i am fairly practical
thanks again
rick
