test run report: had a good test run at raglan beach. winds very light. about 6-7 knots. but pulled out top speed of 49.7km/hr. will get some pics and keep yoy all posted on progress. was good to pack up yacht and put into boot. good driving home with no trailer.
That is an excellent result AD. If you had 7 knots of breeze and travelled at 50 kmh you have achieved a speed just under 4 times the speed of the wind. Well done!!
We are all waiting for some photos of this "Boot of the Car Class 5". If you have truly achieved that I am sure there will be some more built.
thats a lot of sand/salt in the boot of the car boys! You should see the salty mess when Testpilot 1 put his entire LLM into lttle toyota starlet!
Just a thought on sailmakers.. find an up and comming one rather than a big company as often the big guys are very set in there ways in sail design.
The best way is to actually get "the" sail maker to go for a sail on a landyacht so he gets a better idea of the speeds that occur and what is needed.

Thanks AD. I think sulky wheels have been discussed before and a comment was made that the bearings are probably too small for our application with big sideloads.
I like those wheels because they take a standard motor cycle tyre and by the looks of the metal hub they could be modified to take a larger diameter axle and bearing combination.
I am not in the market for wheels just yet but will give you a PM when I am.

this not the sail that will be on my yachts
yacht will be made from stainless steel.
I use the hubs and bearings out of the sulky wheels that split (hot weather on lefroy) and installed them into my 26" wheels I have never had a problem whith the bearings but removed the spacer and used 5/8" class12 bolts for axles

Yes, the sulky wheels are fine for class 5. The white ones may be a better choice in the hot Aus sun. I would still have spacers between the bearings and 5/8" high tensile bolts for stub axle. When cranked up tight the spacer effectively increases the diameter of the axle. Also use Michelin Rapido 2 1/4" x 18 tyres if you can get them. The motorcycle tyres are way too heavy and have very stiff side walls being 3 ply construction. The rapidos are 2 ply construction.

opps yes you do need to install 5/8" ID bushes between the bearings, The wheels are plenty strong enough ,mine split because I over inflated them (60psi)they are fine if they are inflated to around 35psi and watch the preasure on hot days.
