Well this is what I've dragged together so far to get a sail out of. First is my £1.20 Ebay purchase.... all 9m of it. I'm guessing this would need a lot of work to get it sorted out?

Just picked this up today - bit of a conundrum. Right hand side.

Left hand side...

Ta da! Both mast sleeve/pockets have been cut in half and stitched together. Also some holes in whats left of sleeve. Has some ally plates riveted to it so it wraps round the mast and then is strapped together to form one heavy sail. So it would need the pocket cutting off and a new one knocking up out of something (twice) also no battens, and a load of holes to patch... but it is a 5.5m class 5 sail.

Any thoughts on what is the best way forward and please bear in mind it'll be me learning and doing all the work by hand!!

Cheers Col

Your best response will probably come from Paul (landyacht)
but I reckon the last sail could be turned into 2 x reefable sails pretty easy- as long as you have access to a decent sewing machine, or a hand sewing set up- one of the blokes on this forum has an awl thingy that self-feeds the thread and the job ends up looking like it came through a machine, but at a fraction of the cost. The awl thingy can be purchased online,

I cant remember who he is- but he will probably show up here soon enough!

It is a great little tool, I have hand sewn several sails with it now. also is a very handy tool for any canvas jobs. it can be ordered online.

Yep. Seen that little item from AUS230 and bought one similar from the USA (as usual). And my copy of "Sailmaking for the Home Boat Builder: Including Altering Second Hand Sails " is on order. Ready for the hard work to commence.

on the windsurfer sail, unpick the mast pocket and put it aside. lay the windsurfer sail flat, and overlay the R&J over the top lining up the trailing edges, not the front(luff). then we can do a comparison, because the windsurfer sail is in really good condition, and would make a good starter sail. same amount of work as trying to rebuild one side of the R&J experimental double sided sail

Genius!!!!

That looks a lot more Colin friendly. So basically unpick mast pocket, then remove everything that isn't an R+J Sail on the right, stitch pocket back on again. Do I worry about the angle and number of the battens after this? Is it possible to relocate the eyelet or is that a bodge something to suit after transferring the corner strengthening material?

Col,
That looks pretty good to my eye however Paul will give you the Drum. I had to shift the Sail Tack and Clew Eyelets and alter the Angle of the Foot to rebuild my Sails. Try to get it dead right first time but it is better to ever estimate the angle of the Sail foot by an inch or two at the Clew as this will let you Sheet the Sail down harder, whereas if you under estimate you wont be able to Sheet down hard enough and will have to make further alterations. If you decide to do the former do not go overboard with increasing the Foot Angle. As me Ol' Da says "There is a difference between Scratching yer Ass and Tearing Chunks out of it!"

Keep in mind that this is a 'get you started sail" not a race winning blaster.
I would recut the Gaastra on the luff line of the R&J, then cut a slab of the leftover that has the other Eye on it and sew that into place at the front to get you started.
remember to unpick the edging tapes along the foot so you can sew them back on in place and give it a great finish.
ideally more battens would be great , but go with what youve got

Thanks. Just nice to have someone confirm that you're not about trash something before you lay into it. Due to a drastic change in circumstance I literally have to count every penny on this on...but I'm determined to get there.

Finally got the nerve up to start unpicking and cutting, and this is what I've ended up with.

Plan now is take the removed bit apart and graft those bits on for eyelets, batten pocket, luff pocket and general reinforcement. Anything I've missed or cocked up?

make sure you put a strip of material anolg the luff where that clear material is, other than that all good
