gday paul, thanks in advance for having a squiz at the sails.
sail 1 is an ezzywave 4.2m, luff 4m ,boom 1.56m in near new condition, however the
sail has a criss-cross reinforcing pattern imbedded inbetween the film
sail 2 is a north sail 5.5m, luff 4.6 ,boom 1.75m in good condition bar a great big tear in the second panel from the bottom. the film is only a single layer
sail 3 is a neil pryde racing sail with batten cams 5.5m, luff 4.6m, boom 1.81m in average condition, also single layer film
sorry the pics aren't too crash hot ,please let me know if you need better ones and i'll grab the old boys' camera.
cheers mark
they all look great!, that tear is not a problem. looks like you got some bargains
do you have a business adress in man durah or rocking ham where i can organise a pick up. if they can be rolled into one bundle and labeled I can organise a cheap freight pickup
They look in pretty good nick
Note that the Ezzy has a fair bit of seam shaping, which means that unlike the other two you can't flatten it out to a knife blade just by reshaping the luff.
Totally different approach to sail design (and in my opinion way superior) but something to be aware of.
we shall see mr N, plan is for minimum recutting , and actually just adding to the foot. lots of downhaul
i would love some more picasso's though
the ezzy is now a 4.1 with a little peice of a neil pryde VS (pink of course). havent unrolled the other 2 yet
cheers landy. i grabbed a 2ndhand skinny from a fella on the seabreeze buy/sell as a 430 but when i measured it at home it was a 400(doh!!!). the bloke was very appologetic and has agreed to refund my money yet before i do i'd love to know if it truly is too short as it's in good nick and i'm gonna need 2 masts. dad could'nt help himself and is now starting on a second frame (onya dad)
Mark,
Paul will tell you as will I, it can be extended from the base or the top or both if required. Shees! 300mm/30cm/3Dm is Naf All. Main point is is it Stiff enough. Try the test I did with the 30Kg weight suspende3d from the middle and post a pic and one of the lads will calculate it for you.
Ron
cheers nikrum did the test. very similiar to your post on sunday drive.
4mtr mast , mid point deflection 140mm
i know the masts can be extended but i don't want to if i don't have to.
more work, more chances of me stuffing up. i won't get to test untill the end of october out at lefroy so i'd rather not second guess over a crucial part of the build
mate- its easy enough to extend your mast by 300 to 400mm, just pinch a section of your vacuum cleaner pipe and push it onto the top of your mast.
haha.necessity is the mother of invention, however whats with the YOUR vaccy??? that belongs to the missus.
probably the most work it ever do though.
Lz, sn is correct, however I shot over to the recycling station on a shopping spree and picked up some ali tube of the sizes required. I tend to dislike JAMMING ** onto stuff so I measured the extension drilled the tube through and fitted a thru bolt stopper then turned up a piece of wood (In the Drill) to slip into the top of the tube smoothed it off and Pop Riveted it in place. One was an inner extension the other an outer both can slip on or off.. So what is to stuff a couple of $$ of Ali?
Just have a go!! Keep telling yourself you will stuff it up and you will. Think positive and you will be surprised where it will take you.
Ron
problem solved. took the mast back and with the cash managed to pick up
1. 30% 460 bloody near new $40
2. 50% 460 great condition $80
3. one average condition 5.0m sail for me to play doctors with
4. one fair condition 4.5m sail that may not need recutting (may get to test before lefroy) both sails for $50
5. one old top mast section 40% to convert to boom FREE.
6.x beer for 7 hour trek through perth metro madness
cheers paul,can i post you a charger
the old boy has knocked up another generic paul day mini chassis now all i have to do is glass the second seat, sand ,paint, whip up 2 booms and we're in business.
i knocked an insert of pine dowel (a 44mm table leg from the r*pists)735mm long down the bottom of 1 mast held in place with a rubber/carpet shim. now can someone let me know if it pays to glass tape and resin the base of the mast and the original mast join(mid mast) or is this just done when the mast is cut down and timber joiners inserted?
yes i know i should post this in construction but it's after midnight, i can't be rced and i'm off to bed.
will hopefully post some pics of at least 1 completed build by this time next week.
cheers all
Lz,
I don't know about anybody else but I reinforced a Mast and it busted elsewhere and that was under extreme duress. I haven't Glassed the Base nor the Joint in my Gaastra's and have had no prob's. The only reason I would glass the base is to build it up so as not to be too loose in the Mast Step but that is pure conjecture. I did, however, Make a Plug of a Mast Base item and epoxy it in place a wood plug would do the trick though I don't know if it is required. I did it only for piece of mind. If you need to extend your mast by a few cm's then a Close fitting Ali' tube is the way to go either inner or outer is good, around 300 mm sleeved in or out plus the extension and a Dowel wood plug to save the top cup.
Ron
must've been a good blow then aye. i'm jumping out of my skin to get out there and test the minis. dad is excited too yet has his poker face going most of the time. both 460 masts are straight shank bottoms and tapered at the top will the cams be big enough to accomodate the mast?. if not then feel free to ditch them or use them for your own evil purposes[}:)]
