My girlfriend watched it and now doesn't want to come on my tassie trip I'm planning :/ . Other movies that didn't help were 'Life of pi' and 'kon-tiki'. It's funny because watching these sailing adventure movies makes me want to go out on my boat.

DVD rip or the version where you have to look over the silhouettes of people walking into the cinema?

What absolute crap. This film should be howled down in hoots of laughter.
Who sleeps in the for'd cabin at sea? Who sleeps for more than 20 minutes when alone at sea? Who would allow the hatch over the nav table to stay open at sea? who would not be able to repair a hole above the waterline in flat calm sea? Who would climb a mast shackled tro the bosuns chair? Whowould head to sea not knowing how to broadcast a May DaY cal? l WTF is an SOS call and who makes one of those on a VHF radio on channel 88 particularly with the radio sitting on deck. Who abandons a floating vessel? If your sailing partner is frightened by this film then obviously they bhave absolutely no concept of sailing and are not ready anyway.

It is only a Hollywood movie, I'd take it for what it is. Maybe the storm happened before the epoxy set? Isn't 88 the distress calling channel on 27MHz radios? At the end of the day you can over-analyze any movie...the monkeys didn't look real in planet of the apes.

I liked parts of it, but I thought the storm scenes were very budget.
Made me think, how do you film such a thing unless you do it all in a computer.

Best sailing movie ever, The Lucky Lady starring Gene Hackman, Burt Reynolds, Liza Minelli and a magnificent San Francisco Bay J boat called either Baruda or Orient.

The morphing of those two names became Barient as in Barient Winches.

Enjoy the movie.

Just watched All Is Lost. Wow, how disappointing! Endless sailing errors and just errors of physics (you can't sink with a lung full of air, for example). Massive inconsistencies scattered throughout. I could tolerate these if there was any emotion in the acting or a plot / action that kept you interested. Compare Tom Hanks in Castaway; another universe.

I suppose it was worth watching so that my wife and I could discuss / agree on all the things he did wrong. He did a few things right but I lost all sympathy for him after that port tack in the first five minutes.

Where did you watch it? I never seen it advertised at the local cinema and can't see it on iTunes. I can't understand why they go to the expensive of making such a movie and not make it realistic I have been waiting many years for a real ocean block buster just seems they don't have the audience and the experience.

Here is a REAL sailing movie to watch and it is worth the $4 they are asking to watch it.

A couple of clips from one of the Greatest Australians, Alan Villiers.

Even Dead calm was better than All is Lost. At least you get a look at Nicci's sweet li'l ass.

Speaking of sweet li'l asses, check Phoebe Cates in this one. A Blue Lagoon type story but a whole lot better.

Great movie.

Parental Guidance recommended.

Best sailing movie ever eh? It cost 13 million to make and only grossed 12 million worldwide, that's a flop in anyone's book.

And here is a bit more history..........

The Boat Lucky Lady is still in existence. It was named the Orient before and was re-named/christened the Orient after. I believe the boat was given away as a prize near the opening of the film.

"...she became the main prop in the B movie, 'The Lucky Lady', starring Burt Reynolds and Liza Minnelli. In the process, the original S&S designed cabin house was bastardized for a film..."
"Worse still, after the movie was over, the once grand yacht was raffled off as part of a Kool cigarettes ad campaign on television. As you might suspect, her raffle-winning owner didn't have the means or knowledge to maintain her."

And the Kool Cigarette competition to win Lucky Lady ......... www.tobaccodocuments.org/

At only 63 feet in length it most certainly wasn't a J boat but a damned nice boat nonetheless, apart from having the cabin roof raised 18 inches to fit the camera dollies.
A bit of Barient history .......
Those of you near my age may recall that Barients were the first modern winches and set standards, such as the shape and size of the socket for winch handles, which have been followed ever since.
Two industrialist sailors from the San Francisco area were unhappy with existing winches and designed better ones, which they named jointly after their boats, BARUNA and ORIENT.

And the design was stolen ........
The owner of "Astor" popped for a brand new state of the art set of sheet winches from this new company "Barient". Upon return to Sydney after the race some of the then owner's engineer/yachtsmen friends while admiring the new winches insisted that after such a long grueling race and oceanic transit these wonderfully designed and engineered winches were surely in need of "servicing" So they disappeared for a few weeks.
. . .
Shortly thereafter, Barlow Australia appeared on the scene. In total compliance with the standardization of the Barient's.

Financial return on investment is not a true measure of great art. Have you actually watched the movie and not got a good belly laugh out of it??

And a bit more history..............

The "raffle" for the yacht was promoted in Penthouse Magazine. I saw it with my own eyes way back then.

Basically the way it happened. Baruda, Baruna. WTF

And the design was stolen ........
The owner of "Astor" popped for a brand new state of the art set of sheet winches from this new company "Barient". Never had a Barient winch but I have had a few Barlow winches and their ratchet/pawl set up is crap. I would never trust or own a Lewmar self tailing/jamming winch either. Best winches on the market I believe are Andersons.

Sailing movies are few and far between and mostly the sailing is used as a prop for an unrelated story line.

I found "The Lucky Lady" very humorous and would describe it as a nautical equivalent to "Blazing Saddles".

No one "kicked" the cat Cisco, I just found it a tad amusing that a movie that had not been released on either VHS or DVD got your tick of approval as the best sailing movie ever, However I do agree with you about sailing movies being few and far between. The other info I posted regarding the boat was merely for historical interest and was taken from other sources on the net, not my words.

Les Quatre Du Moana. Plot: This somewhat long documentary chronicles events on the sailing ship Moana,
