Hi All

I would like to know your thoughts on a Phantom 32, How would you rate them as a open water yacht? and there build. They look pretty good for the price. Also looking at a spirit 28. Cheers Glenn

Id go with the 32 there look like a good boat and a with a bit more room 28ft a bit tight to fit every thing in Ive found and you have to compromise much more
Just thought Id post this as its cheap I think. Couple of yachts down from me at Yaringa western port
This tahitian is for sale out at yaringa 40 foot over all nice butterfly hatch . The original owner as bought another yacht up north with his new partner
The Yanmar has 40 hours on it around the $24000 mark . The rig would be double that to buy now.
Same yacht as Lin Pardey owned only in fiberglass not teak

Would not rate the Phantom 32 at all.
Not a great design and known for variable build quality.
Also the moulds passed trough a few different people which is never a good sign.

The Spirit is a little Van de Stadt from what I remember so a much better boat you could take anywhere.

What is the budget and what are the plans.

That's a pretty big spread between choices.

AS Romona, said but there is perfectly good Currawong around if you want to go offshore.

Greetings all. First time poster but have been watching for a long time.
I have a Phantom 33. I've had her for about 4 years now. I sail out of Hervey Bay. I have to say that I am very happy with the boat. She is dry, stable and can get up and moving in the right wind. I have sailed her in 25knots constant without reefing but wouldn't suggest doing it all the time. The boat is a bit heavy after I have filled her up with all the usual so she doesn't really start to do much until 15knots of wind. I've had no problems with her structurally and believe the phantoms are well made. I'm no expert but I have not heard of any real problems with phantoms in regards to build quality.
I think the only thing I would change on her would be more storage but who doesn't want that.
The longest I have stayed on the boat was 3 months but I will soon be moving aboard permanently.
Thanks for listening and hello to everyone. This is an awesome site.
Mick

If your going off shore Id be focusing on a 32 foot yacht length and find something it that range it would be more livable than a 28 footer more room for a dinghy more room for solar panels more room for storage ,water, food, kayak
Trying to squeeze in what you need on a 28 footer for blue water sailing and long term sailing takes time and a lot of head banging to make it happen
