One of my sailing heroes has passed. I used to follow Commander Bill King's exploits in his solo around the world voyages. And for the ex navy people amongst us he was also a highly decorated navy officer that commanded submarines all through WW2.
His obituary is really worth a read.

Certainly was. Hard to imagine running a submarine aground then being asked by Winston Churchill over for a drink and a cigar and explaining yourself. I joined the navy at 15 and that was fairly young, he joined at 13. Know any 13 year olds these days that could join the navy?

No but they can join the Naval Cadets, including girls, and that, I have been told is one of NOCNAR's biggest headaches.

Sort of like:-

Yes excellent but only a pom would wear suit and tie, and socks and sandals.

Our club magazine "Tidings" just published some material from the archives, about Commander Bill King visiting Royal Freshwater bay Yacht Club in the early 70's, as part of his solo circumnavigation. Here's a copy...

Poods

(Best I can do on the resolution)
