Hi I'm looking for opinions or reviews on what the SUP community think of Amundson boards. I have been doing some research on them, I'm thinking of getting the 11.3 as I believe that will support my weight and give me stability. But though I have been told to stay away from this brand as they may not be so good in the surf. I have also been told that they may nose dive. The reason why I'm thinking of getting one is because they seem a lot cheaper than other brands. But I'm not sure on the quality of them, I will be using the board in the surf, and maybe catch a few waves, but I would also like to use it for the river too, so if anyone knows something or anything about these boards to say that they are or not so good that would be great thanks Pat

Rob Cribb is the Australian distributor and an ex pro surfer that lived in Hawaii for 10 years. I've watched him surf on the Amundson boards many times and he rips. He's got a good value quality range mainly in larger boards.

Thanks for the kind words Piros, I'll give you the $10 in person or post it ? :)

Hi Pat,

I'll keep it simple with Amundson as I'm not sure who told you they may not work in the surf (I'm assuming someone who's never actually used an Amundson or pushes another brand for whatever reason)....

1. Quality is on par with all the major labels, Amundson has always, and is made in the same factory under the same quality & production guidelines.

2. They are cheaper only in price, and that is slightly cheaper - simply because we don't have the marketing power of the major brands. Therefore the same price can't be demanded for the name but can be for quality & performance.

3. The range is tight with a few key shapes - we like to keep it that way & keep the brand relatively exclusive. I'm yet to have a customer complain about an Amundson in 3yrs so that's what we hang our hats on.

4. As far as John 'Amundson' himself - has been shaping boards on the North Shore for over 20yrs (he finished all my Bushmans etc for over a decade), I got John into kiting over a decade ago & he quickly became one of the best in Hawaii ....basically he is a guy who can do all very well (short board, longboard, kite, windsurf, sup), a highly talented shaper with a lifetime of experience so someone who can add cred' from the land & water.
Anyone who has seen his talent in person or youtube clips won't argue.

In regards to what board you want - would be good to know your weight first ?
Any board will nose dive, that comes down to ability so I'm not sure what level you are at in the water ?
The 11'3" is a great all rounder - has great buoyancy & stability in the flat water, and with it's tapered in rails/dimensions makes it a very easy board to throw around in the surf, definitely doesn't feel 11'3" in the waves.

Get back to me on your weight & ability first, I'll then try to steer you in the right direction from there.

Cheers
Rob

Hey Rob,
You mentioned they are made to the standard as other high end boards. Which factory are they made in and what's the actual construction?
Cheers Danny

Hi Danny,

The big C factory in Thai....under the same strict guidelines & procedures from a very professional & calculated operation, that for 2 decades has supplied many of us with a quality product (sailboards, kite boards, fins, s/boards, l/boards, sups etc).
I won't mention what brands are also made in that factory because that's not my business to announce it.....nor for obvious reasons can I discuss the actual construction of Amundson SUP's....I can say that after John has given the thumbs up on a proven design, we manufacture them in Thailand using the best technology in the industry.....high pressure and high temperature molds creating a composite construction that has the best combination of weight, durability, and value on the water.

Below is an example image into the 'guts' of both AST & CWS (carbon wood sandwich).....

Hi Pat,

Sounds like you at-least have wave & ocean sense, reading the ocean can be the steepest learning curve for most, but you should be comfortable there in no time due to your years bodyboarding. So I think it's best for you to find something that will accommodate your weight that's easy in the surf also....if you don't have much experience on a surfboard, you'd most likely have more fun on a longer style board that is still easy to throw around & allows you to catch plenty of waves.

Reply with where you are located & I'll see if I can put you in touch with some people in your area that might be able to provide some demo's first to try.

Cheers
Rob

My unbiased opinion....

Been SUPing since 2006. I've owned piles of boards from lots of companies.

I recently got in the mood to go long again and bought that 11'3 Amundson.

For one, I know he knows how to shape good boards. I've owned a few customs shaped by John Amundson.

Second, I understood why the price was lower than some others. It's because these are from molds. Many boards today are not from molds. The drawback in using molds, you can't change the design every year because you've got big money invested in mold cost. The advantage is you can offer them for less over the long haul. The shape is a classic.

I'll thrilled with the way it surfs. If you know how to surf, you will love it.

I've got the 12' 6" and its has its good points and bad.

Its really stable and fantastic in the chop.

But ..

Its heavy and a bit slow - also it doesn't catch small waves as well I would have expected

I'm curious about what the "Australian pine" veneer is. I'm guessing Queensland hoop pine?

Hi Ade,
Do you have the 2011 or 2012 model ?
Also is it the TR (AST) or TR-X (CWS) ?

Cheers

I have the 2011 AST - I have no idea how the newer models handle. I would expect the carbon models to be considerably lighter

Hi Ade,

The 12'6" - For elite racing, this isn't the board but wasn't designed or sold for that market either. It was designed for the average Joe who can only afford to have 1 x 12'6"....therefore has to be a board that performs in flat water, is very stable on downwinders & has more of a surfing feel when in the small waves.
Catching waves is all about forward drive - stand as far forward on the pad as possible until you feel the momentum, you'll catch as many waves as anyone.

For the 12'6" ;

TR (AST)
2011 & 2012 - 14.5kgs
2013 - Same weight but now has more nose volume, recessed standing to tail area , 4 deck inserts & is 1" thicker.

TR-X (Carbon/Wood) -
2011 & 2012 - 12.7kg's
2013 - Same weight but now has increased nose volume, recessed standing to tail area , 4 deck inserts & is 1" thicker. A couple of pics attached below....

I'm considering the 2013 Amundsen 11' Cross for a longboard-style SUP....for approx. 75% surf and 25% flat water use.

Looks like it carries a little more width throughout and volume for me at 6'4" 100 kgs and still has somewhat thinner rails.

Since Amundsen was brought up....Would like to hear more about this new board and it's suitability for me.
