HI All,

I am building a board at the moment and it has a super wide tail. I am after a roll of SUP grip so i can cut the shape to fit the board. I have seem some Sup grip like this for sale on a well know internet auction site, is this worth going for? Seems like generic black or camo pattern material.

I am thinking the extra wide swallow tail might need a tail pad made from 2 standard ones. Anyone tried this before?

Cheers Chris

Contact Jon at Balin.. 03 5986 6069 here in Vic.

They sell black deck grip if you don't have any luck anywhere else.

Try Australian Jetski parts in Qld, they sell Hydroturf which is the duck's nuts. Well I use it for windsurf board footpads. Would work well for SUP
I just bought a sheet, it is 1.5 x 1m for about $70, about $100 posted
Fast couriering too.

But is is thicker than what is on my JP sup... nicer on the feet but will be a bit heavier. Can weigh it if u want.....

Flying objects do a great sup sized tailpad (as well as full deck grips). I recently got the tailpad to fit on my 7'10" x30" Airborn (also a wider swallow tail) and the width fits the tail of the board perfectly with about 1-1.5" gap to each rail.

How wide are you making the board/tail. I think the FO tailpad would work on boards up to around 33". An if you're going wider, you can always split it and leave a small gap between the 2 pieces. You should be able to get the flying objects tailpad or full deck grip through your local Starboard dealer :)

Hi,

Thanks for the help, my internet was off last night so couldn't say thanks till now.
I am in Tas so maybe the Hydro Turf or Balin options looks like its easy to organise postage.
Will get onto the flying objects sup pad as well.

I did't want to go with a pre-cut curved deck grip as I reckon it would look kind of weird on a squarish board.

Can't remember tail with off hand. This was an early photo of the shaped blank

Does anyone know if you can add a tint to a epoxy microbaloons mix? I can't seem to find any info on it.

Cheers Chris

Try PJ Burns on the Goldie at Burleigh.

You can by it by the length and colour you want.

The solutions, for instance on my various boards:

[1] make a wide tail pad out of 2 tail pads:

[2] embed the tailpad inside the main pad

[3] spread the tailpad pieces inside the main pad

You can have more examples at: www.gong-galaxy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=4078

Balin grip has a fairly wide tail pad it is cheap ish at 120 bucks but it feels hard under foot should have put a 3 mm layer of that Clarke rubber blue foam under comfort is the go

Hi,Chris this is the info promised, I love your board this is the future What are dimensions and volume?

For the mix of microbaloons /resin you can had some white pigment, sand thinly the surface to leave no mark get a smooth white surface and then laminate the board with resin mix with an other color of pigment. This process make look bright colored your glass .
So laminate your board with overlapping glasses as did in the 70's with pin lines. You can do two color as show on this picture, pin lines are made with polyester gel coat.

For the grip , buy a sheet or stripe in a roll of grip stuff like 3M does under different label or as John's did reckon before. Mine has been provide by GONG's Then use a template that you show upon the board to be sure of what you get after cutting and the most important thing is to cut the grip with a design paralell to the pinline or outline of the board.

Before applying and glue the grip , use symetric bitch mark ...to be sure the grip will be even to the board.

For the TAIL BLOCK I'm recycling a bodyboard made of PE by using the front part of it after shaping it and glue with neoprene glue .It 's stiking unless you stick the sanded side of the PE.

As a finishing, grind the rim of the grip edge in a bevel to make it nice and really hand made fashion

The shape of your board really worth a goodfinishing by fitting home shaped grip and block tail as Radman did customize pretty well his wide tail with the clarke blue foam or cheaper double tail block than Colas but functional did on his GONG board.

Tell us later, please

Wow... Thanks for all the advice, i really appreciate you going out of your way to help.

Radman, That board looks great, what kind of fin set up are you using,? Is there a thread on this board?

Kami, you are the master when it comes to body board recycling

Colas , thanks for all your stomp pad photos, I especially like your double one

I am off to New Caledonia for a week from Wednesday, will have to see what the French crew are up to over there. I usually go to diablo surf in Noum??a which has brands we don't seem to see in Oz.

Cheers chris
