994 low , does't the MET call 990 a cyclone?
Whatever happens should be some nice South in the wind,

I'm not an expert but from what I understand, it depends on the pressure gradient around the low... a steeper gradient will drive stronger winds.
So if the pressure drops over a short distance, a TC might be declared with a central pressure of 990 (for example) but if the gradient is less and the pressure change is spread out then it might need to be a 980 (for example) or lower for a TC to be declared.

by definition "Tropical Cyclones are low pressure systems that form over warm tropical waters and have gale force winds (sustained winds of 63 km/h or greater and gusts in excess of 90 km/h) near the centre"(Source: BOM)

So there's no specific 'trigger' pressure as such without considering the wider weather patterns surrounding it.

The entries are coming in thick and fast now. And with the forecast of promising condititions, this is a must do and see race. Not only do we have competing the "cream of the crop" of Australian Paddling Athletes but an incredible response from the weekend warrior and beginner paddlers.
This will be a very exciting event for all involved. Over $6000 worth of Prizes and Prize money.Stay tuned for all the latest updates on the race!

Just to add to the $6000 worth of Prize money and Product Prizes from Event Sponsor Watershack (www.watershack.com.au) are 1st 2nd and 3rd place trophies in each age group and category. The Product Prizes will be based on a competitors lottery which will see a lot of very happy paddlers receive.
So come on everyone, this race was designed and delivered for all those who have been screaming out for races of this kind. This is the first one of the year on the East so hoping for all to support it in a big way. Doesn't matter if your a beginner paddler or a World Class athlete, its here, come and do it and have fun!!!

rumour on the street is that the race start has or might be put back some time ???? any confirmation?
(trying to organise the family)

there s a clubbie carnival on at kirra on saturday so parking will be tricky.

Also is the preso straight after the race in the park or is there a different venue it will be held at????

thanks

With the wind ESE turning SE and the clubbie carnival, would the race start line be better at Snapper?
A little longer in distance but shorter in time with the down wind rum line!

The drain pipe at Burleigh will be the spot , they will probably get away by 11am from Kirra and they should get there pretty quick with ideal conditions , so a good call would be to watch the start at Kirra then drive to Burleigh for the finish.

Having a look at the charts can't see that swell isn't predicted to be any bigger than it has been today and having a look at Kirra this arvo, there are heaps of holes in the banks allowing easy access out the back. Coming in at Burleigh will be a breeze for any level of paddler as well.
As an added bonus .... HEAPS OF SUNSHINE ......
It's really going to be one of those days where everything will come together for perfect conditions for everyone to get out there and have blast, whether you have dw once or one hundred times.

It's a deep water start at Kirra and the shore break is pretty tame at the moment so you can pick your way out at your on pace and yeah Mac that's the finish it'sjust North of Burleigh surf club. Great spot to come in potentially you could pull a wave from the point to the beach. Finally we might get see a true downwinder race from start to finish with a wave riding finish.

Woo. Not sure what forecast that's based on! A 2 metre 11 second east swell is always going to mean solid waves! Which isn't to say everyone's going to be getting pounded but I reckon allowing for a bit of time to get out and possibly more than one attempt could be the way to go... It is good that there are a few holes in that bank
