im in the process of making a new summer board for myself, and i thought some people might be in interested in the process.
i wanted a board that was light and responsive. I was really happy with how the last board turned out, but theres always room for fine tuning and trying new technologies and processes

Heres the last boards APS file

And heres the new CUT. tweaked the rocker, widened the nose and thinned out the nose and tail on this one. Decided to go stringerless on this one as well. should complement the new glassing method were going to try out.....

shaping/scuffing early next week. More pics to follow!

Looks like we are at about the same stage I'm making an 8'8" quad - hollow wood SUP with balsa skins.

Yes, still 30" wide. I think the wider nose gives it a narrower look

Cheers mate - its been a while in the making

I havent ridden a hollow wood sup yet - Ive got a 5'8" fish that has paulownia and western red cedar skins - it goes great and I love the feel of the hollow wood in the water - it just feels more alive than epoxy.

The boards are heavier out of the water but you dont notice the weight on the wave - other than having plenty of drive.

Apart from my 12'6 I'm going for an all-wood quiver. I sold my 9-8 Starboard to fund this and recently got rid of my 6-1 shorty

I'm keen to check out your new method for lapping the cloth too...

Nice looking boards, like the shapes. Whats thickness skins are you using Shep and are your rails solid balsa using 5mm sheets?

I agree with shep the HWS are heavier out of the water but you dont notice it in the water and they do carry drive/momentum thru the turns. However I have a 6'2" timber skinned composite thats solid balsa rails and pretty light and I do notice the swing weight compared to my 6'6" HWS.

Just about to place an order for some 100 by 6mm paulownia next week for a couple of kite boards so might have to up the order to cover a 9' SUP as well.

cheers

Heres a link to my blog http://treetosea.org/pg/blog/Shep/read/23035/88-balsa-skin-sup-jensen-method

Skins started out around 8mm to allow for damage and will end up around 4-5 before glassing. The rails are solid laminated 5mm balsa nose and tail and hollow through the mid section.

Sorry for dropping in Lookie...

damn you shep.....Now i want to do a balsa.........Damn you to hell........

haha - just do it mate you will love it

If you use the same design as your new 9'3" you'll have two identical boards to compare HWS with Epoxy.
