Considering some of the surf we get for club comps, check out the perfect 10 that Joel Parkinson just got in round 5 of the Quicksilver Pro at Snapper.

Crappy, onshore conditions, yet he still ripped it to bits. Not the best wave you'd ever get at Snapper, didn't even get barrelled.

Prefect example of judging to the conditions of the day.

Absolutely spot on Jedi!! The judging has been great the whole way through. I still think there should be a time limit on priority so that it is not used tactically. It's about the best surfer not tactician even if it is a comp.

I agree. He ripped that one to bits.

wilko got ripped off in his heat. owen did one big turn and a couple of cutties and scored a high 6 while wilko threw down two big turns on a better wave and got a 6 which lost him the heat. on the whole it's been good but that was crap.

Dunno about that-I reckon Matt Wilko was short changed.

The old saying in boxing that applies in surfing is "You never beat the champ on points, you have to knock him out". It was close with Wilko and Owen but if you leave any doubt with the judges they will always award the higher placed surfer, always have, always will.

Not right perhaps but how many times has Kelly has those decisions over the years?

funny you should say that, and Im sure you have more insight into it. But the other can be true also. Tony hawk wrote, that after he had retired the first time, he had caught up with some former pro judges. When speaking to them regarding scoring, more than one told him they would score him less for the same trick, ie: if he did a 540 and so did Hosoi, they would give him less, simply becuase the felt him better and therefore expected more.....

My apologies to all. I must have been sitting on the crapper for that heat! Remember only god gets it 100% right, though with all the video replays they can watch????? In general though the judging has been a lot better than I can remember given the conditions and the need for personal interpretation. I still can't agree that KS has some how fluked his way through to 11 world championships. I'm sure that the artistic element must count for something and maybe thats what happened there?

The essence is not to overpower the wave to gain maximum point potential, but to flow with the wave for the same result. JP said about his 10 that he could have chucked some airs in there, but the wave seemed to be a better carving wave than a launch pad. Given that there are five judges and the top and bottom scores get dropped off, I can only think that maybe they didn't think Wilko flowed with the wave and tried to overpower it??? Otherwise it's got me buggered!!!

Parko's 10 was a 10 nobody ok the 40 yr old guy could have surfed that wave any better.

I spoke to a few customers today who were there and they all said the same Wilko was ripped,I have not seen the heat.

So after all the discussion, I went back through every heat in every round (bugger all else to do but watch reruns of "I love Lucy"). I really reckon the judges got it right in this case purely from an aesthetic point of view. Technically very similar rides.
If you then go back to the first day though, I reckon Damian Hobgood was ripped off bigtime because he was on his backhand. It all comes down to personal interpretation in the end and Hometown support. In my opinion they are all incredible athletes and excellent surfers!!!

Parko seems ON. At $7.50 odds I put $10 on him yesterday for the win. Go Joel, earn my family a night at Top Noodle!!! Hahah. Kelly was $1.30 and firm favourite.

Kelly is actually $2.750 for the win.

$1.30 for his next heat against Kerrzy, that will be a good heat.

Yeah that was a pretty cool statement to sum up the wave. He really did have momemtum on that wave, just kept gaining speed section after section, turn after turn right through to the end and that final 360.

Fair enough, maybe it should have been a 9.5 in today's modern era with a 10 going to the guy who throws in the extra 360 lien air somewhere, but my original point was that it was the perfect example of judging to the conditions of the day. Just because it's onshore chop doesn't mean the best wave in a heat is a 5.5 to a 6.

Qudos to Kelly. He has questioned judges scores when he believes he has been over scored. Not too many out there do that in any sport.

I think most just take the good with the bad, all usually evens itself out in the end. Good on Slater if he does that though.

Load up on Ace.... Best bet since KP at 50s to win pipe ( sorry just had to remind myself of that). $21 in a 8 horse race, beat the fav and he is away. I reckon Kerrzy is in the same boat.

Ps... I already have cash on parko...

I don't normally bet, I can't stand losing money.

I just had $10 in the account from a souvenir bet on Black Caviar the other week to keep as a momento when she is more famous than Pharlap.

Joel looks relaxed, he's ripping as well. Just hope he hasn't peaked too early.

Event will prob be at D'Bah on Sat and he has been on that bank all year. I hope he does well.

Yeah, he looks the goods but hard run to beat Jordy, than beat the winner of the Taj QF then maybe a slater or Owen (assume favourites winning), I'm actually in syndicate type thing with the boys we all throw in 50 and try and pick overall champ and the winner of each event, adds a bit off interest to watching comps, we even have guys who don't and never have surfed who are now what you'd call form experts, actually pretty funny.

Joel has to get through Jordy in his next heat and that should be a ripper. It looks like a bit of a thing going on between those two at the moment.

It will be a clanger Mike. Jordy is 1 up on him already in this event, I hope he gets revenge.

Funny that he's #2 and gets underrated by a lot of people, even the bookies.
