I currently use an ankle leg rope . Not infrequently when i stand up I find the leg rope is under or in front of my other foot which then necessitates trying to sweep it back out of the way. On a few occassion's that occurs just when a surf able wave appears..bloody annnoying.

KNee rope better ? or maybe i just got to adjust the ankle rope better from the start.

What"s your preference. Have you tried both

How long is your leggie? I find a long leggie gets tangled around everything. Unless your surfing really solid waves I'd use a leggie about a foot shorter than your board. They stretch after a while anyway. I've used both ankle and knee and I prefer ankle but plenty of others will prefer knee.

Yeah I'm an ankle guy myself. I have tried the knee thing but found it feels worse on my knee.

Like Thomo said, don't go too long with your leggie. My board is 8'3" and I use a 2.5m leggie.
I still seem to be able get on the nose although the leggie is shorter.

I've always been so pissed off with standing on.. tripping on.. and getting tangled on my leggie.. but since I've been using a knee cuff I'm as happy as Larry.

hi, i don't know if you are a long time surfer, but here is something to consider. most people on shortboards have the cord off to the side of the ankle, but on a sup i think it needs to come off the back off the ankle. now, can someone tell my why all of a sudden, i'm getting my leggie caught up in my paddle on some waves
cheers

Hi Jeremy,
You know me !! I use ankle, but calf/knee is a preference for some. Either way, since you're are a natural footer, put the leg rope on your right leg, and try fitting the chord so it sits "off the right side of the right ankle".

I use a normal long straight leg-rope, but maybe a coiled calf-rope is better for you..... attached as per (dodge) diagram !!

ankle for me, I've got a knee/calf rope but it's never felt comfortable sitting there so it now its always tied to my ankle.

hi, i reckon that wrong for sup ping because of the amount of time standing front on. i think straight behind the ankle for sups, but that just my take on it

Side of right ankle, rear of right ankle (or in between!)... six-of-one, half-dozen of the other.....

Similar, side of right calf, rear of right calf......

SUP = Leggie tangles, sorry but that's the truth.

I use both in different situations.

Ankle Leggie, Less paddle tangles during paddle assisted gouges. However you will set on it more often, and possibly trip on it if your walking the board. I use an ankle leggie in most surf on my short board SUP's where I am not walking the board and doing more turns.

Knee leggie, Tends to tangle with your paddle during gouging paddle assisted cut backs, can be annoying, but is easy to rectify. Little to no stepping on leggie (if you have a good one). Great for walking the board and nose riding. I use a knee leggie always on my longboard SUP's. I also use a knee leggie on my shortboard SUP's when it gets big. 1. because it's longer, 2. because it's thicker.

Someone mentioned going a shorter leggie, I would definitely not recommend this! Having been speared in the pelvis by a SUP and left winded unable to breath while 5+ sets had their way with me, You want your board as far away from you as possible, and it doesn't have to be big to do this. This incident left me wounded for weeks, and at least a month out of the water! I am not saying that a long leggie will save you, but it will give you the ability to get further away from your board. It is annoying reeling your board back in, but it's worse the other way!

Conclusion IMO is Knee leggies are better, stronger, and generally longer and my pick in most situations. And with out being a pimp (I have absolutely no affiliation with them and pay for every leggie) Creatures of Leasure leggies are the only leggie I will use, SUP, Mal, Shortboard anything!

JB

P.s. before anyone picks up on it, I do use a 6' light shortboard leggie for comps. This is not to be compared to general practice.
