This Friday is looking good.

Our plan is to meet at Sandy at about 9am and leave St Kilda at 9.30 sharp.

DJ

Friday 25 January
Winds
Northerly 20 to 30 knots shifting south to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots during the late morning then gradually easing to 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon and evening.
Seas
0.5 to 1 metres increasing to 2 metres during the morning.

The forcast keeps changing..

We are now looking at a 7am meet at Sandy..

It's still looking good but the change is now due mid morning rather than late morning..

It's now looking like a 6am start.. and a dawn DW'er.

Funny feeling the change is going to sneak in early.

Just put the popcorn on with predictions of a good video to follow soon. Is that too much to ask DJ?

No video Potty. I turned up at 7, not knowing that the start time had been moved to 6am. The wind was ok when I was there, but its a bit hard to do a car shuffle if you are the only person.

The 6am crew pulled the plug as there wasn't much wind early. Change came through a bit after 8:30, so the optimum time to be on the water today was probably from 6:45 - 8.

Yes it was a crazy morning with the weather.. 5am and there was nothing (maybe 5 knots).. Got down there anyway at 6am with fingers crossed and although BOM said 20 knots at the beacon the tops of the trees at Sandy where not moving an inch so we pulled the pin because looking west the dark rain clouds that come with the change looked close.. Lucky you didn't head off at 7am Ross because the change hit before 8am.. Bugger, bugger, bugger!

The fun of downwinders hey, waiting for all the stars to align. I've noticed a lot lately that there is conflicting predictions (wildly different) between what the BOM says and what Seabreeze predicts (Sydney weather anyway). Has anyone else noticed this?

That's the weather I guess, unpredictable at times. The Breeze seems to use other sources as well as using BOM's data but not sure of what these other sources are. The Breeze seems to be truer than the BOM at times.

Better luck next time hey fellas.

You probably could have taken the northerly out into the middle of the bay and then on the change, you would have been blown back to the start point. No need for a car shuffle.

To be honest, today's wind was predicted 3 or 4 days ago - it did exactly what it was forecast to do, it was just a question of timing.

Thrills, epic spills, and smokin runners to be had.

The run Phill was describing is outside the bay. That isn't a bay.

haha, come up to the goldie on a average run and i'll bet you'll think the bay is groomed afterwards.

seriously, we hardly ever get wind, wind swell and ocean swell all going the same way

Great vid Matt.. Shame we pulled the pin at 6am.. You are flying on that new skinny 2013 Ace.

Love the cloud in that vid.. You could tell the front was about to hit by looking at the sky.

To be fair, I think this is a regional dialect thing. "Grooming" to a Victorian means the full metrosexual treatment - body wax, spray tan, manicure, pedicure etc. Grooming to a Queenslander means occasionally cleaning food particles out of your beard.

I'll get some vid soon of some of our open ocean downwinder stuff for you.. Between Flinders and Phillip Island we have a great downwind run with big wind swells that come straight into Westerport from the Bass Straight.. I have some vid somewhere from the first time we did it.. I've done it a few times and some local guys have been doing it a lot lately.. The only thing that stops me doing it more often is the drive there is well over an hour (each way).

Here it is.. It's only worth watching or the music.. .. It seems like years ago and we were all very much newbies at downwinding.

Nice vid of my local run DJ! We need more of you guys down here to do some DW, it's a great paddle , but most of the time I'm out there by myself or with Lazza.

Are you coming down to the Great Ocean Paddle? Will be a great paddle if we get the right wind!! It's looking like it may be SW for the race.

I was very keen untill I realized it's on Saturday and unfortunatey I work in the arvo.. I doubt I could make it back in time.. Hope you get good conditions.. btw.. What direction works best for that Flinders/Pt Leo run.. SouthWest? .. and does what way the tides running matter?
