Just about to plan my first SUP trip to Bali with the family for November and wanted some local advise on 4* accommodation and best areas to stay which are in close proximety to suitable SUP beaches.

Also is it best to rent or take my own board, if it's rent can anyone reccomend any good rental outlets ????

Thanks in advance
Phil

I have heard good reports from mates who spent time with Jankie, He is on here
(the forum) He hires boards Jimmy Lewis and starboard i think? Other than that just behave yourself and surf to your ability.

I hired a Jimmy Lewis 8'6 Quad from Jankie [Bali Kite and SUP]earlier this year, good value.
His hire paddles are a bit suss,I'd take my own paddle next time. You would be better of on the Nusa Dua side in November.

i took my own 9'0 on virgin no problems.
going in november you are going to be suppin mostly on the sanur/nusa dua side of the island as the winds aren't too good that time of the year for the bukit or west coast.

Hey Rossall, we went last Jan which is wet season like November and stayed at Nusa Dua - the Grand Hyatt actually. If you want the ultimate spot to stay on the east coast of Bali this is it I reckon. Straight in front of the Hotel are about 5 different breaks ranging from Waikiki type rollers (depending on the swell size) to North Shore Hawaiian outer reef monsters. Wind is pretty much offshore most of the time and the beach is immaculate. We had no crowds except for the left right next to the headland which is full of beginners and a couple of locals.

My kids could surf out the front in waist/chest high cruisey waves and I could paddle 15 mins to the south and surf double overhead bombs.

This part of the east coast gets all the swell unlike Sanur which is much further north.

You can also escape all the craziness of places like Kuta which would do my head in if I had to hang out there too long.

Fly Virgin and take your own SUP, we took 2 SUPs 3 surfboards and assorted crap with no excess - also take your own wine (for the misses) and pay someone to get you through customs.

for sure the VIP customs thing is amazing. off the plane with my visa, luggage and boards and in the van within 20 minutes. and it only cost 60 bucks which includes your 25 dollar visa charge. well worth the cost.

Hello guys, yes November is definitely East Coast time.
Nusa Dua area waves are bigger. Hotels generally are more expensive except if you start to go toward the Benoa area.... I don't like much Nusa Dua as it doesn't really feel to be in Bali and everything is expensive there.. Sanur you have more choices of waves and close by you can go to Serangan (turtle island) where waves are about the same size of Nusa Dua OR travel North toward Keramas where there are few new interesting spots...
FYI paddle we rent are Jimmy Lewis Kanaha full fiber paddles with paddle guard.
We have about a dozen cut every 5 cm to accommodate everyone height (same as QuickBlade).
Paddle are good, quite more flexible then Carbon (we like for waves), about 150 grams heavier then the same model Carbon but pretty much indestructible..
Only broke 3 in 4 years!!
That is why we rent them out without big fuss...
Bye Jankie

^ Yep I met him too he gets around, he was mixing up some special drink for Rondha, I think he fancies her.

I just came back from two weeks over there, I did that much SUPing and kiting that there was a couple of days that I just couldn't paddle anymore because my arms were so sore.

I went with Air Asia and paid $50 for an extra 40kg sporting goods allowance on top of my regular 20kg which covered 2 kite/surfboards, a 9'2 SUP, paddle, 3 kites, a harness, 2 bar and lines etc.
I have never taken so much gear but it was no real drama as I had transport arranged from the airport (Ketut actually) straight to my accommodation which was right on the beach and meant I had all conditions covered...awesome trip.

Ha ha Scotty.

Seriously though I don't get why everyone goes to Sanur when going in Wet season.

If you got kids who surf like me the breaks at Nusa Dua are literally 100 meters off the beach and are safe as. We could walk 50 m from our hotel room and be straight in the surf with a choice of 5 breaks (more if you count diff peaks). Didn't drive once for a surf. We also had swell everyday. The smallest the outer reef got in 2 weeks was 5 foot (10 foot face) but out front was still 2 foot. Best part was though - absolutely no crowds even on the main break you just sat one peak down, and this was the Jan school hols!!

You don't ever eat in the hotels but if you walk 10 min up the road you leave Nusa 'Disney Land' Dua and are in a 'typical' Bali villiage with markets, cheap food, etc (choice of 2).

Jankie offered to deliver me a board as well when I was thinking of hiring one for my eldest son so you can rent boards there as well. PM if you want the details of a good driver.

Yeah when I go to Bali I like to stay in a $2 a nite accom with the locals and there family on the cliffs ... wouldnt be caught staying in the likes of nusa dua... As not my thing but I'm a single guy with no kids ...if I was traveling with the family I would do what goatie did as that way there is something for everyone !!
You should defiantly go exploring if you get free time ?? Turtle island is a super fun wave and you could find a peak to yourself early and look further away the more the look the more you find in Bali !!
Mate where ever you end up will be a super fun trip Bali rocks!!

Yeah no worries with Air Asia, pretty basic, no movies, alcohol etc but it's only a 4 hour flight from Perth and you can pick up flights real cheap.
I forget what size SUP they would take but know it would have covered my 10'2 if I had decided to take that for I think it was $20 extra each way for 15 kg of sporting goods, as I said I paid more but took a ship load.

I stayed at Balian which is a couple of hours up the coast from Kuta, the main break there and up the road at Medewi is pretty packed with surfers though, but we went for a couple of long paddles and found a way of carrying the SUPs on motorbikes and managed to find a couple of quieter breaks up around that area.

I put a couple of photos here www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/Review/82-Jimmy-lewis-Stun-Gun/, lovin the new Stun Gun.

I think you would be better off on the other side of the Island at Sanur or Nusa Dua as others have suggested in November though, more chance of clean offshore conditions and a bit more for the family to do.

I know that Hyatt was in the middle of renovation.. You may want to check!
Mercure is right in front of Simzy reef and close to the Wreck and Oka Point..
Mercure In my opinion is very family friendly with huge beach and also nice Yoga Studio.
All description of the various spot are on my web site.
Bye Jankie

FYI.. I'm sure that some of you met him on the beach...

In memory of our great friend Simon that passed away not long ago, we decided to name after him one of his favorite waves in Sanur!
We use to call this spot Blue Reef and looking toward the ocean is the first break right from the Light Tower.....
He loved to surf and kite there and we know that when riding his wave he will be always close to us!
RIP Simon you are greatly missed...

Simzy Reef
Type of break: Coral reef
Direction: Peak with long right hander and a short left h
ander
Crowd: Low to you will be by yourself
Level: For everyone
Best Swell Direction: S, SW, W
Best Size: 3-6 ft
Best Tide: Mid-low to High
Best Wind: N are offshore, Glassy morning
Surf Rating: 6
SUP rating: 10
Far away from the beach just right to the light house. Rarely surfed! Only by few locals kids. Is our best SUPS spot we have found so far! Can be reached in 15 minutes of paddling. Best in no wind. Need some size to be breaking but if too big it will close out. Give you a great ride with a nice channel to be able to paddle out

Just back from Bali staying at the Villa Puri Ayu & hiring from Jankie. Can recommend both. Short walk to the beach & the hire boards are kept at Villa. Had right to myself one morning & shared it with some locals (prone) on another occasion. Very good vibes - excepy for another SUPer who kept dropping in! Loved it!!
