Good find Oliver. Iz is an institution in Hawaii, go into somewhere like Borders and his music and books are everywhere. His music is played frequently on the local station, hearing him out of context you could think it was a little cliched but once you experience his music in his own environment it's very special. I bought a couple of his CD's a few years ago and whenever one of his tracks pops up on the ipod it just transports me back to Maui.

Funny thing I've just recently come to perceive is the way paddling connects you in some way to the history of the human race - so much of early movement was on water and involved some sort of boat, canoe, log whatever and some form of paddle. I've got this theory that we have been doing it for so long that there is something inside us all that resonates to paddling, maybe that's why we have all become so obsessed with SUP.

When I hear someone like Iz singing about family or the environment and the sea you start to get a tiny inkling of what it may be to be an Islander and how fundamentally different their perspective on life and what is important really is. I hope this doesn't sound racist - certainly not my intention, actually completely the opposite. To me the paddling/waterman/family thing is so much part of these people, something I have a huge respect for.

I've spent quite a bit of time in Hawaii over the last 20 years and I feel like I've only just started to gain some insight.
