Breezers, just spoke to Dean Gardiner this morning about BtoB. The wind is looking good so it is unlikely there will be the same ugly conditions as last year. This year is looking like it will be straight downwind for the last half of the race, but side wind for the start - lucky if you have a rudder!
Entries - early bird registration finishes today - 12 April - so save yourself $20 by entering online at: oceanpaddler.com/
PFDs - they are compulsory. I know we all hate the idea of wearing them - especially in the harbour - but there is no choice. I am going to purchase one this week that allows for a drink bladder. I would of taken a camel back anyway so it is not really the end of the world. If you are thinking of doing the Doctor or the Fenn Cup races you have to wear them so you may as well get a decent one.
See ya Sunday.
Just spoke to the organisers. Even though it IS legal to be on the harbor on a SUP with no PFD, it looks like PFD's will be compulsory in all major events.
As a surfer it does not sit well to have wear such a thing, but after speaking at length to a number of people in and around SUP and ski racing, I am starting to see that if we want professional, well run events, we are going to have to get used to it.
Here are the arguments that have been out forward as to why PFD's will be mandatory for most racing events- To grow the sport, organisers have to cater to everyone who wants to participate
To include everyone, safety has to be of the highest concern.
One incident could put a spotlight on our sport which could lead to even tighter regulations on recreational paddling requirements.
As most distance racing is longer than 40 mins you need hydration. If you need to carry hydration it is not a big step up to get it in your PFD. Most good PDf's come with a bladder option.
If you want to eventually race down-wind or off-shore you are going to need a PFD.
According to even the most hardened opponants of PFD's who have Ski raced for many years, they all say they are no more constricting than a Camelback and do not take long to get used to.
Sounds like we have to get used to this in all major events if we want to participate
For those that want to compete this Sunday and don't have a paddling specific PFD, the organisers are making available a Type2 rated PFD with hydration on the day.
PM for details if you want to pick it up on the day.
Looks like it will be a great morning, and vastly different to last year. Shame about the PFD's, but you mentioned Dave, I would wear a camel back anyway for hydration.
Will be there for sure, paddling OC or SUP, see how my back is.
Paddle oc Pete you will win it as all the decent OC paddlers are elsewhere , ha ha.
I wish we had that wind forecast.
Yep looking good for Sunday with a 10-15 knot SE'er blowing!
Word is that a hairy, head-banging, pie-loving rocker from up north maybe coming down for a paddle!
Nothing like an escorted paddle on one of the most beautiful harbors in the world!

Boylos

Just to show you how far SUP racing has come in just two years, here is Sam's Seabreeze post from 2009 below. I left my Southpoint barge in the garage and joined three others on prone boards this year.
For anyone interested Becci Gardener won the prone category comfortably (well done) with the rest of us coming in within a minute or so of each other in the 1.25 to 1.27 mark which was a bit behind the leading SUP guys. Might have been diffrent in head wind!!

"Conditions for the event was almost calm at 2-5knots with a fair bit of random boat chop making things a bit wobbly.
Clint Robinson won overall on a ski in a time of 44mins and 55 secs with Yanda Nossiter the first women in 54.27.
First outrigger was Lucas Gamgle in 54.59 and the first outrigger female was Susie Wood in 1.07.53.
In the all important SUP division this is how we finished:
Sam Parker 1.17.30 Starboard Point
Steve Beaumont 1.34.22 Starboard 12'2"
Adam Quinn 1.39.09 Naish Glide
Andrew Christopher 1.39.40 Southpoint Kalama
Jeremy Corne 1.47.27 Laguna Bay 11'
Peter Brereton 1.48.29 PSH 10'6" I think?
Not too sure about the other 2 entries listed. I think they may have been prone paddlers who finished just in front of Steve. I don't think they had their own category so they were probably told to go with us.
Cheers,
Sam. "
