Thanks to Aiden at windgenuity who responded to my email about being not happy with the Naish 14 stock fin and then swapped it over, excellent customer service
Thanks to AA for sending over a wave grinder fin to try in said 14 Glide
Some good people in the industry
Pics of wave grinder fin ???
I'm doing some fin time trials on the Naish 14 tonight. So stay tuned !
Phill, bring the camera, for a Pictorial !
The Wave Grinder fin works exceptionally well on flat water race boards in calm to choppy conditions. It keeps the nose in the water and allows the board to do its thing. The fin also increases the the size of the sweet spot in the middle of the board from our trials. Due to the upright nature of the fin it also allows the race boards to pivot easily around buoys for turning.
We have a dedicated course with repeatable results so we can trial the different fins and boards.
A full review will come once we have the numbers in!
Phill
Imagine the weeds you could catch on that..
Good to hear about Aiden and Andrew.. Both great blokes.

did a down winder on one of these fins last weekend in really chopy windy conditions the fin went really great felt sweet and was great on runners thanks AA for lending me the fin and ya board cheers
We'll probably start a new thread, with pics from tonight....
3 different fins made very marginal difference for me on the Naish 14, over 400m, with 1 turn (2x200m - out and back). The 3 fins were the Naish 14 Standard Fin, this Winged Fin in photo, and an 8 inch True Ames Al Merrick Channel Island Generation 2 Single Fin, with loads of rake. Photos to follow.
The legrope / leash trailing in the water, added maybe 3-4 seconds over 400m. Very marginal. But that becomes roughly 10 seconds per km.....
The Naish 14 Standard Fin probably points the best, allowing up to 12 strokes on 1 side (with minor wind assistance).... but by pausing to swap sides, you get a free little glide and rest, and seems to make little difference overall....
Essentially, slightly inconclusive, more scientific testing required !!
My first run was 3mins 7secs on the Naish 14 Fin, and all the other runs were peppering 3.08/3.10/3.11/3.12..... what effect does muscle fatigue have.... ???
Have fun in the water people !!
Good looking fin.
You guys need to go to the nearest windsurfing shop and have a look at the range of race fins on offer and wave fins. Windsurfing has cover a lot of ground in relation to high aspect ratio fins and designing in twist etc.
There are now a heap of fast weed fins on the market to.
Most fins in the sizes for a SUP come in configuration that will fit fin boxes on a SUP.
Yes DJ, many of the windsurf fins have tutle or power boxes. True Ames Fins are available with the 'normal' or 'original' or 'american' fin box mount. (but I thought a bunch of Aussie's invented the fin box?).http://www.trueames.com/wind_select.php?wind_products_id=14
Also, my fin experiments last night didn't show "much" noticeable difference between fins. Flat water paddle conditions. Time were quite consistent with 3 different fins.
The other thing we found out was that the rider and board weight makes a significant differnce as to how well the fin board combination performs.
It would be interesting to see Jonathon try out one of these fins.

This fin agrees with my suspicions for general flat water paddling..... Pointing straight, has a fair bit to do with Fin Surface Area. This looks like a nice Shallow Water Tourer too, and a Weed Dropper !!
A variation on a Hatchet style fin!
The board on the Left of Picture.... I saw this a while ago, and initially thought it was a Naish 17, but it has a square tail (Naish 17 has a rounded pin). Decals a logo's on it looks like Naish too.... the one on the right is 15' x 30" according to the advert.... the other could be 16 or 17.... x 27..... Or is it a future Starboard ???....http://www.star-board-sup.com/2010/products/boards/board_k15.php
My bamboo fin has arrived, haven't had a chance to try it yet, it's surprisingly big, looks good! You are welcome to try it in the 14 Glide Simondo. I was wondering about that board next to the K15 too!
Did Cheyne and Ben ever have a patten on the winged keel fin ? I have an original shortboard fin signed by both in the trophy cabinet a keeper for sure
Thanks J.
If I was forced to lay a $5 bet, I would say it is a Naish 17 Proto, with a very similar square tail to the 14 (I still wonder if the Naish 14 started life as a 15, and had 1 foot hacked off!). But, why would a Naish be on the K15 site ??!! The decals have a very similar arrangement to the Naish 17.... Deck decal screams of Naish ! Nose rocker is also very Naish (14) !!
I will say, the square tail on the Naish 14 seems to give it plenty of versatility ! It would be much harder to surf in small waves with a pin tail, in my opinion.
I like the shape of that new Starboard Bamboo fin.. How many inches deep is it Jonathan?
I reckon that white board next to the K15 is a Naish 14' Glide.. The pic is slightly distorted.. and it is very odd to see a Naish in a Starboard advert.
Starboard do have a secret DW board coming.. Maybe they copied the Naish 14..
DJ
Agreed, could well be a Naish 14..... pics can be distorted. The flipped nose would distort the eye also.....
a lot of opinions about this fin. i got a lend of one for a few hrs. tried my fin, the grinder, my fin again, the grinder again. on my 14'( the rocket), i believe it is faster. but the best thing is the board bobs around less and generally behaves better, which means faster. jacko and myself have found at training the flatter boards get thrown of line easily in broken water and other boards wakes. i believe this fin will be able to 1/2 that disruption. hopefully there will be a lot of knockers and i'll be one of a few that is going to get one
cheers
ps imho the right fin/rudder on a dw board is just as inportant as surfboard fins
The Starboard Bamboo race fin is 8" long if you measure vertically down from the bottom of the board. But if you measure form the centre of the section that goes into the fin box to the centre of the tip of the fin it is 12" long (that is 12 inches from where it comes out of the board, not counting the insert section) - it's a substantial fin. Still haven't tried it yet but will in the next day or two and report back.
It's so swept back it really looks like a weed fin.
Andrew Allen from PSH has given me a set of the wavegrinder thruster fins to tryout at the Roar comp on the weekend.
Not sure on what they will do ,neither is he as nobody has tried them yet.
I will have to wait for some swell as it is flat as here on the Goldie, and will post the results as I will be trying them on a 8'8 and 9'6 in both quad and thruster setups.

DJ... I can't knock it till I try it
