Interested to know whether people believe you would get better value by cross training for SUP on a longboard or a shortboard and why?

Get an OC1, will help with paddle technique and core strength which will improve both paddling and surfing.

Cross training for surfing, shortboard IMHO. Reason why is that performance SUP is closer in the way reacts out of turns than a longboard.

If you are on a good SUP it feels very similar to shortboard ijust extended and drawn out.

If for paddling and racing, as Ali says OC1 or OC6 or Surf Ski or all 3, you can't have too much fun eh?

Hey Phil, I am guessing you are referring to Kristi's training in which case you mean training for short high performance Supping as opposed to Longboard style Supping.

Although I haven't really ridden longboards (apart form a couple of times on a massive log perhaps) I would agree with CMC in that short SUPs surf much like a blown up shortboard and therefore the best training would be on a slightly blown up shortboard. For me, that would be something around 6'8" I would think - I used to ride 6'0" fish for small stuff which now feels like a skateboard.

That said I reckon the hardest thing for crew coming off shortboards to SUP is learning how to come off the lip properly - well it was/is for me. I started watching high performance longboard vids and Leco SUP vids amoung others to suss out the technique as it is definitely different to shortboard technique where you can push the tail out quite early with the back foot.

I think a little bit of Short & Long.

But also SUP paddling into Victorian 25 Knot Winds and 5 Knots of current should also be part of the training regime. It's good for endurance, and strength. But above all else, it strengthens the mind!!

If you mean cross stepping you should definitely go the log.... But for high performance surfing a surfboard and a shortboard sup... unless that's not your thing?
I have ridden mals in the past pre sup days when it was 1foot.
I think for fitness good cross training would be mountain biking it hammers you and great for leg strength therefore more power!!

Very simply. Get a sup that's too small for you. You will fall of all the time meaning more push-ups. You will struggle to stay up right meaning more balance. You will get really strong without realizing it. When you do catch a wave you will surf more dynamically. All round you will improve strength, Endurance, balance. When you do surf/paddle on a board your comfortable with, you will rip like chicks knickers

Just my opinion but depends why your doing it, if it's to learn how to do SB style surfing than go a SB, ie vertical surfing, bottom turning straight into the lip, re entries etc, if it's to learn how to cross step draw out a bottom turn and trim a board then go a lb. Turning a longboard would also probably help to learn to turn a big board.
If it's somewhere in between then maybe a fish or an egg/ minimal might suit and I'd say if you go a SB then still get a bit of width and thickness in the board so it's stable and paddles good.

hi phil. i've often thought i would like to see kristie do some short boarding.

from my experience this is what i would do.

grab a good 12'6 racing bop board and surf that. then go for some short board surfing after that. i've found the feel, the lines and the technique are the same. more so than a shortboard sup. obviously the shorty lines are going to be way tighter. to surf a 12'6 well you have to have good technique. sticking a paddle in the water to turn isn't going to cut it on those boards

after surfing a 12'6 for a lot i decided to surf my shorty. really thought i was going to be in for a shocker but it felt like i had never been off the shorty at all

so from 12'6 to short board than surfing sup.

repeat dosage as required

A shorty like this would be a good start.

Lancer or Celica? I'm not sure. But yes, they match! The board matches the pin striping too.

(you're closer to the industry, so I'll go with Lancer).

Don't go the longboard cross training thing, you wont go back to your sup haha

I agree with Lacey, surf the big tankers for a while and drop back to your HP board and see what happens.the thing will turn on a dime

Simondo that's no Celica,I had the Celica 73 mustang two door fastback

Firstly thanks for all the input guys and gals much appreciated and Goatie no its not for me as you guessed.

Mac you have talked me into dragging out and blowing the dust of an old longboard so you have had a win!

We access to7s 6'8 what do you think about this board as a starting point?

Lacey we have also taken up your suggestion about surfing a 12'6, Kristi has a new BOP style board on the way we finalised the details this morning and will be starting to give racing a solid crack this summer season and next year.

Simondo,

Farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk, you must be KGB or MI5 to get that image???

That was a sweet Len Dibden single fin, I think I still have it some where.

Looking good for the weekend and only 2 weeks till Carona cant wait!

6,8 7S go very well, set one up as a quad and see how she goes on that, very easy boards to surf.

Hey Doggie,

This must be one of the older 7's as it strictly thruster! Should be ok though as long as we get some waves.

It will still surf ok Phill, thruster is a tad slower but if you are surfing at OG its not a real fast wave from what I have seen
