Hi CMC,

It was Friday morning and there was one of everything out at the alley.

Its an old school rig but it gets the job done.

All good Mark we'll catch up next time, I'll be back and forth for a few months yet.

I would like to get out for a paddle, the Currumbin creek appears to go for miles.

Thats a bit like saying..."wow you surf well, you must have a really good board"

Great shots Phil. That first shot is great, even clearly shows the lack of a leggy (just for Serg)

Is it? I know Phil is a great photographer, he even does it professionally. Give him a Kodak disposable though and see how a shot of the Palms looks from the Alley rock.

I'd say he has a pretty good camera.

Thanks Rob,

With morning light that good anything is possible, the guy on the Fanatic (Serg?) was having a ball crankin in and out with a lot of finesse its what got me out of the car walking to the point to see what was what. I have to say its made me view the 12'6s in a different way. I was surprised how well the narrow red rocket surfs.

That guy isn't Serg.

It's Dion Parker.

Dion is the guy who writes the comic in SUPWORLD mag.

He is pretty handy on any sup aswell.

Skilled use of good equipment. Even a good camera in average hands will look average. These shots are really nice.

the red rocket is one of the best 'surfing' 12'6 s going around. their pick up speed of a bottom turn is quite surprising

Didn't mean that was Serg, just **** stir in cause I know someone is very anti no leggy in the surf ;)

The great camera comment is a bit of a contentious comment with a lot of my friends who are pro photogs. It's like saying a pro surfer is only as good as his board, or a great chef must have some fantastic knives and saucepans. No matter how good the gear is, if the guy behind the lens is a mug the shots won't turn out anything like this. And again, me just having a **** stir day.

i've been looking at some of the hd stuff getting around ie- hero2.

it might be my eyes, but the definition and colour is getting to the stage where its better than what i see myself in real life

to me, photo's and vids are starting to look 'unreal'.

then again, i'm no oil painting of a spring chicken any more

ps. no disrespect there phil

Hey Mark,

No disrespect taken,

The sensor quality on even basic camera bodies these days (d80, d90,d3100 etc) means that with good technique and fully understanding how DOF, the multiple AF and ISO systems work you will be able to get great to outstanding action results.

This image of Kristi was shot circa 2 yrs ago with a $400 2nd hand
d80 an 18-55 $150 kit lens fitted with a filter in a $60 plastic bag housing. I have an 12 x 18 on the wall and everyone that sees it is blown away by the quality, it is equally as good as the first image in this post.

This was shot with an 18 - 105 kit lens, the MUA I use is superb so again little to do in post.

I do believe that the level of post production work being done is adding surealism in some cases. I prefer to get the job done in the camera, rather than having to spend hours on the PC.

Phill

Goatie,

It wasnt a busy day at the Alley by far and there were many waves with 2 SUPs, multiple mals, a goat boat and at least 1 eskie lid all up and or still paddling on.

I have to say the guys on sups pretty much stayed wide and showed great control over the boards and also let a lot waves pass through that they could easily have taken.

Flat out in summer it would be kaos for sure.

Agreed! Doing the whole job in camera is a true skill!
