Just got a Canon D60 with a 24 - 105 L lens and Sigma 100 - 400 lens (Piros I weakened as the L was $2200) and want to get into some video. Was going to pm Reflex, Casso and Piros but I though a few others maybe interested so if they can add here that would be great.
Matts stuff is great

You mean you don't want to film me on a 20km flat water paddle?

I've got a brand new 8'10 sitting in the garage that hasn't touched the water yet! Haven't even put fins in it.

Any reason why you went the canon over Nikon Hilly?

I just bought my first DSLR about 2 months ago and went with Nikon, no particular reason was just a good entry level camera for me.

Hilly just set it to auto (green button)...and just shoot in good light to start (don't shoot into the sun) you've got a great camera let it do the work for you.Crawl before you walk.

Always try and have the sun behind you and set up on a good tripod especially with the long lens , take lots of shots of the same thing and then change the settings.Matt (Reflex) has some great advice but just play around with the basics first.

Re Canon V Nikon , Canon have the jump on Nikon on video with the DSLR

and if you want the best video out of a dslr - panasonic has them all beat with the gh2 - (except for low light ability where the canons really shine)

check out the results from the etc crop feature which zooms your lens in 3x in 1080p and 5 x in 720 p just by sampling a 1080 or 720 rectangle from the middle of the sensor (goodbye aliasing and moire too)

effectively turns any lens into 2 lengths - eg a 50mm becomes a 50 or 250mm

a 400 mm lens becomes a 400 or 2000mm !

and you can do snap rack focus moves just by pressing on the touch screen.

for video sharpness , autofocus , lack of artifacts etc the panasonics smash it.

my humble little firmware hacked $400 gh1 shoots nicer video than any of $3000 Canon 5d mk2 or a 7ds i have used (except for low light)

But the Canons and Nikons rule for photography.

All of the above mentioned dslrs are brilliant for getting creative - especially with good fast lenses. my 20mm pancake f1.7 is permanently bolted on to my gh 1 .

The Canon l series lenses are the bomb!

at the end of the day even your iphone is an amazing camera (video or still)

its the story that you tell that is about a million times more important than all of the above

Yeah but the Phallic Egorous in all us blokes still compels us to buy the longest lenses and boast the specs!

How's it feel when you standing next to photog with big zoom and you look at your Little wee GOpro and feel you're lacking something.

Hi Reflex looking to buy a slr mainly for photo as i have a hd video camera, would like a 300mm lens, was looking a Nikon d7000 with a 28-300mm lens nikon or Tameron or may be a d5100 with same lens but i would rather not spend that much money an less you think it would be worth the investment. Is there another better option out there.
I did look at the panasonic but i think i was looking for a bigger zoom
