Evening all !

Here are a few picks of the project I have mentioned here previously .

Yes very stable once I get some momentum DJ you are more than welcome to try it . I'm offering 50:1 any takers .
You can see why I dont want to cut her up she is very pretty from a hydrodynamical point of view .

I've named her " Thunderchild " as in " War of the Worlds "

My first idea was to cut out the deck and lower the centre gravity etc but she will be also a nice board to plug around in 3-5 knts with a big rig up, so I have to sort out some sort of out rigger attachment .

Thanks for the OC1 referral and idea that is a great step in the right direction please keep the ideas coming.

Will keep you all posted , watch out for the YouTube posting of DJ's attempt to conquer the " Thunderchild "

All the best ,

Dartboy .

P.S Please don't ask where I got the towel from, I don't remember

Scared me for a minute Dartboy - thought you had somehow got a photo of the blank for my 14' Penetrator that Stewie is making. Don't worry about rigs in 3-5 knots, once you get hooked on SUP you can forget about windsurfing in light wind - just hollow that sucker out. I keep looking at the boards, sails booms and windsurfing stuff in my van wondering when I will finally work up the courage to just put it all in the shed. The joy of the simplicity of board and paddle will get you in the end and before you know it you will be a fit 42YO!

She's a beauty.. I'm willing to give it a go..

It looks a bit like then latest custom flat water Bark boards coming out of California.

I like the idea of hollowing out the deck to make it more stable.

I'll post a pic of my Cobra windsurfing board that I reckon would paddle fast.

I agree with Jonathan.. the best part about SUP is when you're packing up to leave.. It's like board on..and that's it..

I know your dead right about the simplicity of SUP. MMMMMMmmmmmmm you've got me thinking now ( stop thinking doughnuts , stop thinking doughnuts )

If you could get the balance right it would fly , plenty of floaty too , very thick foam sandwich construction.

I don't know , better just get out on the Naish and paddle .

Talk again soon ,
Cheers

It looks.... errr um.... a bit tippy. I like the name though. I like the hole in the back - good place to keep live bait.

Kind of liked your shed too - looks like you have lots of good stuff - what's that car door I can see?

Dartboy - interesting "add on" concept that may be worth thinking about. More info on www.huki.com

Pretty easy to mock up something similar with a little bridge and balsa wood or foam (cut up noodle?) outriggers to see how much flotation and how far out it needs to be. They have put them a long way back which means it won't be a problem hitting with the paddle.

I would not recommend that you do the trial in the Yarra! Give me jellyfish over e-coli any day!

Just drop the centre board back in scooping the deck is the go , it will still be hard to balance but it will be fast in the flat. ...Great project though.

Is that a old door off a Ampol truck in the background ? What else have you got stashed in there. ?

Where'd you get the towel?

For Yarra SUP-ping you are much better off just getting on your Naish and going for a paddle. It will be stable and easy to manage. Far easier and more fun and a much better workout, which is what you want. I would lose the will to live if I fell into the Yarra. Ick!

If the board is a collectable why don't you take a copy off it. Use it as a mould for the hull and then put any deck you like on it , rather than cutting it up. You would also gain a little more beam depending on what materials you used.

Hi Jonno thanks for the Huki wing idea , That has to be it for ease of installation and would be able to give extra width needed without causing too much drag . I think a carbon tube interconnecting two styrofoam shaped floats at the rear should just about do the job . To start with I could have them set at a level where they are at same level as bottom of the board then raise as balance and ability increases .

DJ you can be first to try it out on the Yarra . I had a bad bad experience in Noumea with some algal bloom in the lagoon , nearly killed me .

mmmmmm anyone know of someone good at shaping foam ?

May hit the Barwon near the heads late saturday afternoon, look for a Lardy boy on a yellow Naish 11'6 come and say hi .

All the best ,

Hi Mick ,
Shes not really a collectors piece unless you have urgent needs to re-live the 80's sailboarding scene.

I just like skiff type hulls , harks back to my old Cherub sailing days.
Very efficient hull. Just a tad too narrow as is .

Love your idea though . thinking about it it may be better to use it as a male mould and make it a larger hull maybe pin off the tail .

Again thanks for the ideas .

Cheers ,

Darto.

I used to sail cherubs back in my teens, great dinghy's, ... yeah I thought it be okay as a male mould, use some foam and glass, vacuum bagging would be the way to go, just use plenty of mould release.
