having to rethink my surf over dw position. two days running from snapper with pretty good conditions on offer with today with a building swell being a beauty.the best rides today were the runners where the swell in front drags the board along for ages, now that's bliss. the naish 17' came into it's own today for those owners still waiting for a good dw run
cheers

tell you what mac, we had a first timer with some oc experience and a lot of surfing background, and he said something after that struck. his words were it's very intense and everything seems to happen a lot faster. but for me, then you have worked out the pattern and doing cutting and chasing etc, i sort of get into this zone. and i believe as random as it looks- there are swell pattens there, it's just a matter of finding those patterns. down winding is surfing the ocean so true a surfer at heart is right
cheers

Well how many times have you heard about that guy who sat out wide or way out and waited for that wave /set to come and he wins the comp or gets that shot in the mag, I have a canvas of Bob Mctavish taken at Lennox in 07. My friend who is a well known photographer here on the GC got the shot. The story goes something like this.
Bob paddles out way out and sits wide for 90 odd minutes and that set comes and he takes the second wave. What a shot it is and better mine is signed by the man.

Sorry of topic a little, but its all about READING the ocean.

mac

ps, Lacey I still laugh at how we met at that shop after years of first meeting, small world.

I think a lot of you guys saying.. Surf.. Surf.. Surf.. have never experienced a REAL down-winder on a REAL down wind board.

If you had I think most of you might change your mind.. .. Imagine a wave that lasts 1 1/2 hours..

One day someone's going to capture a good one on vid.. I'm working on it..

It was great to have CMC along yesterday for his first true downwinder. He bought one of Lacey's DC17's (the orange one) and he managed to get some nice runs on it first time. Good effort as getting runs can take a while to work out and it was tricky out there. That board does go really good so you've got a keeper in that one.

We had Noel up from Lennox way and he had a great time on his Naish 14. Dale and I were swapping between the green DC17 and his new DC14. Jonny came out on his outrigger and tried to do a bit of filming. We will see how that turns out.

The runs were very tricky for the first half but really groomed up nicely later on. The DC14 absolutely flies and linked runs together really well. I think Dale has made something special there!

Surf and Downwind - that's my call.

Yep, did both yesterday. Surfed the early and had the funnest, scariest and most exhilarating (for me!) downwind run with the boys in the arvo. First run ever on a SUP and I cannot wait to go again. Can't wait to get it wired, the chatter on the bottom of the board when you get slung onto it feels amazing. Ummm, buzzing slightly still..... sorry.

Thanks Mike! (edit) and thanks to Lacey for helping me out with a board and then even teaches me how to use it.

Come on CMC - tell everyone about your shark story.

Welcome to the crew! Once you get a little more time on the water you will really start having fun - it's guaranteed.

It will certainly keep the numbers down....... That was what the 'scariest' bit was referring to. I'm with Lacey, just Tuna.

Those Manta rays were scary? Dale reckons they were Dolphins and Noel reckons they were Mermaids!

For my own sanity I am happy to accept anything. Jonnies sounds good to me.

Manta rays was my personal mantra to stop the knees knocking after becoming somewhat religous.

DJ - No idea what the purpose of that second photo was for! If you have pics of downwinders then please let's see them. Let's not go down that whole pimping road again, please.

Today (Sat) we will have another hit from the Tweed seaway back to Currumbin or burleigh. The conditions are not ideal, so it will be a little more challenging.

If you are new to the sport the todays run might not be for you. But, if you want to come along you are welcome. Send either Lacey, Dale or myself an sms if you want to join in. We will probably meet at around 12 somewhere.
