Aloha everyone,
Wondering what fin set up is favored for high performance SUP boards. I am riding future Pancho Sullivan sides with a 4.75 k2d2 center fin. This is a great setup for that thruster feel, but I do sacrifice a bit with the paddling(Yaw) Any other suggestions or ideas? Looking for that happy medium of great paddling with high performance.

I've always liked big heavy boards with seven fins myself..

Thats what I enjoy about these aussie forums, never a straight forward answer! You guys love to poke fun. But seriously, any suggestions?

I use either FCS FG 5 inside foil fins all round in my Short Board Sup and PC 7s all round in the PSH 12ft gun.

You will need a center fin adaptor for both of these sut ups.

The inside foils appear to reduce yaw when paddling and sort of act like power steering when you initiate a turn.

Both these set ups work well for me in up to OH++

My 2 cents

Oh and before someone says it " Yes I am aware that thruster fins dont work in paddle boards" but they do in mine!

Out of interest, what size board is it that you are riding?

Rich uses Sunny Garcia's all round on his I think, I would use FCS PC 7s all round.
Both are thruster set ups with fin box adaptors.

In OH+ we change to a 6 - 6 1/2 inch centre fin.

Phill

Here's an interesing new vid from Evan where he's talking to Todd about the new C4 boards.. and their fin set ups.

He (Todd) says quads need to be surfed more up from the tail.

Hi,
I use K21's in the sides as they are a good sized fin, with a Futures 5" glass fin in the back on my performance short SUP. Just move it to the back of the box to lesson the yawing but there will always be a trade-off for maneuvrability.
I then use a similar setup on my 12'0 gun but instead of a 5" i use a Futures glass 6" in the tail.
I use this this setup in my Tolhurst Longboard as well because as i shortboarder it gives you the performance you want out of longer boards.
Works for me anyway!
Happy Surfing

Good video Davidjohn. Thats precisely why I dont ride quads, they dont fit my surf style. I like to ride off the tail and push hard with my back foot, so I prefer the thruster or 2 +1 setup.

What kind of fins are the k21's? Sounds like your setup is similiar to what I ride. I really like this setup, but there is a trade off in the yaw department. Was thinking about trying the vector foil side bites that futures make with a 6 inch center. I guess its all about trying different setups and see what works for you.

H2 Large sides, 6 1/2 inch single in the back. I tried every fin in the FCS range (literally) and it feels great to me. First surf was like a light going off in my head!

The cant on the H2's just seems to suit the extended bottom turns off the paddle, the inside foil keeps it loose with good recovery off foam rebounds etc.

I was pretty dialed in with the fcs, then paddle surf went to future side fins! Oh the confusion! So far, I really like the pancho side fins which are similar to the sunny side fins. Now I am thinking about going back to 2+1 to reduce the yaw. I think I need fin therapy!!!

I have heard the H2 Large work well in SUP's (i tried them in my regular shortboards and didn't like them)
K2.1's are the original FCS Slater fins that are blue with the white dot on them.
I am using Vector's in my SUP and love them!
It's just a case of experimenting but i do know quality fins make a BIG difference!

It looks like FCS wil be releasing a fin that is either SUP specific or will be recommended for sup. looks like a cross between the h2 and the 3D tip. looks the good with carbon and yellow. Dont know when there out though.
If you want some fruity stuff, futures are doing some great fins as well.
you have to look carefully CHECK OUT THE INSIDE FOILS OF THE OUTSIDE FINS..... sorrybad shot....

I see some things never change old mate, I heard your mojo was restored. Mr F was a happy man again. In cryptic terms once you had a tick rather than a cross you returned to P Earth.

As a test pilot I am only a phone call away. Lets ride!

Is that a hatchet fin in the center? Who makes that fin? My vector fins came with a hatchet trailer, but cant use it in center box.

Kauaifiveo, Yes its the same hatchet that came with the vectors i wouldnt recomend it. it amplified the yaw 2 fold when paddling.
if youre a big fella and want more of a carving style fin for your 9'6 wripper, try and get your hands on a set of the gerrys. could be a nice blend.
*****scotty mac- they also come as quads

I had a 9'6 wide ripper at one stage and my favorite set was a proto type from FCS. mick fanning template. hand foiled f/glass. a lot of flex. still had a bit of yaw as well though.
stay away from the single fin if you want short board sryle drive. a single fin in the ripper seems to flat pivot more than anything!!!
if you can hang for a month or two. I went and saw the guys at futures yesterday and you should see all the NEW stand up fins theve got coming out. high performance short board stuff to primo down wind fins. dedicating a lot of time to there SUP division. trying some of the new stuff might keep you out of trouble
They even have board handles. ive just ordered a crap load as theyre the best ive seen. not to big /not to small.

Thats awesome lookie,
I was wondering when the fin guys were going to make more SUP specific fins. Dont really like what is out there that they call SUP fins. I hate spending big bucks on shortboard thruster fins and really only getting two fins out of the deal! The Gerrys look good, but real pricey!

Nice fins Lookie,
bought a set of Stretch FCS in new core material (yellow). should be good.
i have been using simon anderson large front and medium rears as a quad work well on sup. the stretch fins look bit more drivey.
will be good on my surfboard if not on sup.
got a ripper set of g10 futures on my burton tow board.
best fins ever used. pricey, think they were about $300.
burton tow boards go pretty sweet, you guessed it hilton, its a quad also
