Fins - go on & tune them.

Hey there,

I just thought I'd mention how stoked I was with trying out a new fin combo on my 10'6" Naish.
The stock fins it came with are a 9"centre fin, & G5 side fins.

I wanted to see if I could get some more Snap out of my turns,I could feel the board getting a bit hung up and fin-stalled through the re-entrys.

So I tried the FCS H2-small side fins with a 7.3/4" (flexy) centre fin.

The results were impressive to say the least!

The board turns so much tighter now, I can feel the H2's kick in as I get the board turning hard off the tail/rail and the smaller flexier centre fin feels faster and more responsive.

So if you want to get more performance out of a board - try some different fin arrangements & positions.

Where in the box did you find the center fin works best...Any pics?

No pic sorry, I had the 7 3/4" fin 1" back from the centre of the box -or to be more specific - L.E of fin 12" from tail.

I have only been out once in onshore waist-high - so looking forward to a good solid overhead -high day to really test this set-up.

Check out the FCS H2 fins on - www.billabong.co.uk/

The picture shows the big rake the fin has but it does not show the extra 20 degrees of splay & the inside foil.
This is a radical & very cleverly designed side-fin. I think the H2 has alot of performance benefits for our SUPer tankers ;)

Hey DJ I managed to upload some pics of my board;

I cant believe how much time it takes just to add images to threads - Not something I can be bothered doing much of - would rather be riding ;)

Hi

Is that the standard Naish deck pad? I like it.

Hi Jethro,

yes it's the naish pad but as you can see I cut it into 4 strips - this looks better but more importantly it lets you know where you are on the board without looking. you can feel where the centre line is and the 1/4 line as well. works well for me. I think I'll put a tail-pad on someday too as it rides so well off the tail.

Thanks for the pics..btw..Great wax job with the wax on the nose..and I like the way you lined up the pattern on the pad with the board.

Any chance of a pic showing the side view of your center fin..(showing the rake)

Also just wondering...Does you board balance when you use the hand hole.

7.3/4" centre fin side view( it's one of my old windsurfing fins I used on 8' thruster wave sailboard):
These fins have really losened up the board - it has affected the paddling too, it is less stable & when paddling along the flats it turns alot more. I've had a few sessions on this fin set-up now in junky wobbly shoulder-high onshore & it goes well so I'm looking forward to a good big clean swell.

The handle does not balance well - I tend to use it only to get the board onto my shoulder or head for carrying.

To get your wax looking like that: First you carefully cross-hatch using a hard wax on its edge like a crayon - the quality of your lines affects the finish. Aim to get unbroken smooth "crayon" lines. Once you've done the cross-hatching wipe off any excess wax with the flat of your hand. Now wax in the usual way, gently rub the wax on its flat side in small circles. The wax will build on your cross-hatching.

Thanks for the fin pics and set up tips...also great waxing tips..I'll have to get my mal out and re wax it..

Did you ever use yours as a single fin..and not use the side fins?..That's how mine is now and I thought I might put them in once I'm down the coast at a surf beach.

I had heard that the hand/hole was not in the right spot on the Naish boards..But they must have fixed it because mine seems to balance perfectly when carrying it.

How about just a couple of pic's of you surfing it before you give up on adding images.......lol

Wouldnt the thruster set up make the board more stiff?
And you could also paddle the board in a straight line alot easier?
