Just wondering if anyone has found a good GPS app for the Iphone that can be used for racing. I was sure there was a thread on here that talked about one but alas I cannot find it.
I use runkeeper, I haven't raced (yet) but it is not to bad for training gives you all the usual readings, average speed, break down of average speeds/km, top speed, distance covered etc.
You can set it to give you audible readings every 5 minutes or whatever and can overlay your course on google earth.
There is probably better ones around but for a free app it is worth giving it a shot.
PT and I use the Motion X App on our iPhones.
I used it to track our race course about a week ago and here's the info they send you.
btw.. The time is not great because I was stopping and taking pictures along the way.

DJ I take it that I just go to the app store to download it? Thanks for that. Today I got 3.4k in 27 minutes. Im actually not sure if that is quick or not but I've found myself hooked on the racing side of SUP. I would actually like to see if there is interest in getting something up and running like the windsurfers have with there speed sailing website. This is an international competition for teams where they can upload GPS speeds. It is really quite popular with all the sailors I know. Im not sure if the SUP crowd would be into it though.
hey i don't want to be the cowboy. I want to to be the army guy. Btw I don't think any of them were straight.
do you download the strava run or the strava cycle??? I think the only fly in the ointment is the building of the website
abvio.com/ need to add Paddlemeter to their suite.
Was there not an app that could measure paddling cadence too?
gregc, I use mapmyfitness from the makers of the internet site mapmyrun for running, paddling and everything else. It links back to the net and keeps all your training/racing sessions on file, you can also map out a training route before you go out. Haven't had any trouble with it yet.
motion X is heaps better and does "wig" out or use as much battery as mapmyrun.
maybe we should all get the same app and log some paddles on line like the sailboarders do.
I'm sure we could organise a comp with prizes for longest fastest and most unusual route.
Have always used Mapmyfitness as when I first went to iPhone I downloaded both and tested them. At that point Map my fitness was superior as it had automatic upload the website etc, it also had voice updates and allowed you to use iPod. Motion x then had some superior features but these ones were better with Map my fitness.
This morning I paid $2 to take a look at the current MotionX to check it out.
It now has all of the features of Map my fitness and more. Looks really good.
2 negatives are: it is not free, it does not have delayed start so that you can get yourself ready.
Apart from that it seems to be a little better than Mapmyfitness, kind of depends on what you want, it looks like they are copying each other.
I downloaded the Motion X. looks ok to me. I'm doing a time trial this afternoon so I will test it out.
