Definitely not dinnertime viewing but it is a timely reminder that no matter how experienced we think we are mother nature and our equipment can turn on us.

This is the result of tangle with the 9' fin of my 12'6 in 1-2' surf.
Got rolled, I bail, board jack knifes, 10' slash. Ouch!

Fortunately I was close to Steyne Surf Club and the local crew got met out of the water into an Ambo and off to hospital. Thanks boys!
Over 100 stitches later I am left wondering HTF did I get caught out in such obscure conditions?

The Mrs is cooking my steak on the BBQ atm.
I normally have it rare but I just changed my mind "Well done thanks love".
Personally, I would have milked it for a GWS attack - could have got some great coverage for the shop AA. Then again it's not WA is it.
All the best for speedy recovery mate.

Time to file the sharp edge down?

All the best on recovery. Keep it away from infection and you could be back in the water within weeks.

That's such bad luck AA. Hope your back on a board soon.

Your right it does serve as a reminder that anything can happen when your least expecting it.

I'm sure you've run the scenario through your head a 1000 times and still not sure where you went wrong.

We have all got to be so careful. Our boards are big, hard, sharp and very unforgiving.

It's images of wounds like yours that hold me back from stalling my sup and pulling in when its dredging off the bottom!...Dam that pic is going to haunt me even more every time it starts walling up!!

Thanks for the kind words guys! Definitely looking at a slow recovery coming into summer. There wasn't a lot of blood, thank god. Arteries were spared.
The locals did think it was a shark at first.

We all get rolled by our boards, a million times. We all know that feeling of a fin massage, but for some reason I have escaped unscathed for 40 years. This time when I reached down and felt this mess behind my leg I knew I was in trouble.
The boys wanted to cart me straight up the beach but I hang in the gutter with my leg up and waited for the Lifeguards. Somehow floating in the sea for as long as possible felt more comfortable than the thought of squirming in the sand.
They morphed me out but couldn't mask it completely. I am lying in hospital now with very little pain until I stand up. Lots of physio for me! Bring on the cricket!

Mate, I have known you some 20 odd years now and nothing surprises me. Every bloody sport you do...mountain biking , SUPing, surfing , windsurfing, you love the injuries.
I know you were hoping to get me up SUP surfing at Merimbula and I know you were a little concerned that I'd beat you in the downwinder but there are other ways to get out of the competition.
Does this mean I get a bed in Merimbula now?
Will call around tomorrow with flowers.
Get well soon AA.
PS Can I use your PSH 14 footer now that you won't be using it?

Honestly, if there's a worse gash than that i don't want to see it!

You deserve some kind of award, the "bloody award" maybe.

"There wasn't a lot of blood, thank god. Arteries were spared."

You must have missed the Popliteal artery at the back of the knee by about a bees dick, best not to mention the sciatic nerve either.
That is a mean injury!! Get well soon!

Far-out AA, that's nasty. I hope you heal well & trouble free.

By the way, this little Gash Maker was dragged out of Pambula River Mouth on Tuesday afternoon.

that is why i've just bought this 9" flexible and soft edged fin to experiment with. i've only tried it in tiny waves once but they were similar to the ones when the gash happened, and the board sizes were similar. the fin seemed to work fine and as soon as this crap adelaide change passes through i'll be testing it a lot more
