Ben Owzinsk is a prone paddle boarder who competes in the Victorian Flatwater Series. Ben makes all his own prone boards and at the Great Peninsula Paddle he asked Kristi Page if she could stand on his prone board and paddle it? The wind was blowing 20+ kn Kristi laughed jumped on the prone board and paddled around the Sorento Harbour.

Ben wanted to do an experiment to make a hybrid SUP / Prone Board that was at its widest point 21 1/4 inches this is what he came up with and Kristi paddled it today on the Barwon River.

Simondo did make a valiant effort that was all time funny to watch but no cigar.

Could you even stand on a board this narrow? 21 1/4 widest to 9 narrowest?

Downwind and upwind it was pretty fast and she could even kick turn it in 15 - 20kts

Pup its a one off experimental board that Ben wanted to create to see what would happen.

In real life as Simondo will tell you there is very little of the board.

Kristi is going to use it to prone paddle as added strength training and balance train for races in rough conditions.

When she got back on her Fanatic race board it was a stable as a side walk in comparison.

ah ok Phill - hence it's narrowed profiling & what looks like extra deck padding thickness ... good idea actually for paddle training/conditioning

Give it a couple of years and those Starboard Ace's will be around that width.
They just keep getting narrower and narrower.

Pup as Husq says for lighter riders I think you could go to maybe 19 inches from what we saw today and other prone boards Kristi has paddled.

She adjusted to the board in less than 1/2 hr. With a more complex double concave bottom shape like the C4 vortices I believe 19 is easily possible.

I have no doubt Kristi could downwind on the board she was riding today!

With width being one of the key factors in how fast the boards travel and with kids crossing over into SUP it won't be long before we see narrower race boards.

We all think we can't until we try.

Phill.

Sh1t, just read Sam's post on his new Starby at 23 & 1/2 " wide. I thought 25" was the narrowest. I guess they're closer to 21" then I thought.
Press release: The Starby Toothpick 2013 model on way.

My oldest kid at ~ 45kg standup paddled an old 1980s 6'10" surfboard at 19" wide.. She also stands up on the mal and soft boards all the time out the back. . Weight defendant for sure...

I did an ocean DWer yesterday on my 27.5 Allstar and one of the crew had a 23.5 ace, I'd love to be able to use something like that but at almost double her weight I don't think I would get far (love to give it a go on the flat sometime though ).
I am fairly sure in the next year or so there will be production boards around 21" for the youngsters and lightweights.
