Hey Folks,
Just took my SUP out for the first time in some bigger waves than usual - it was about 4ft I guess and a fairly powerful wave (Muriwai on NZ West Coast), and I really had a hard time punching through the waves on the way out!
Any tips?
When I was caught inside on some of the sets I just tried to build up a little pace and punch my way through the foamball, but was getting bucked off. I got pretty close to collecting the board with my face a few times, the nose of the board was really getting pushed upward with a lot of power.
What is the best technique for getting out the back when its bigger than say, 2 foot?
Scored a couple of set waves though, a tiring experience, but still pretty fun.
Cheers
It's just practice , never say die and bail always have a crack at it , you will be surprised what you can get over. I am working on a get out video
Sweet, would be keen as to see that. I trawled Youtube but couldn't find a "getting out the back on a SUP" video, noobie SUPpers like me are counting on you.......
On big white water that isnt passable 1 technique is to stand at back of the board and flick the board over white water as you dive under wave... this way when the board is over the white water and you have a leash on you dont get dragged by the wave as much.

One of the keys is to "lean forward" as the board rises or you'll get thrown back.
Don't put to much weight on back for board or the wave hits a bigger surface of you board and will buck harder.
