The best pies after a surf.

We traveled across Australia for three months and surfed and ate pies in a self motivated attempt to gauge the best pie shop (in our travels) we could find. We viewed this task as a public service

The results (which are subjective of course) were difficult to arrive at as there is such a plethora of great pie makers out there.

Anyway here are our results

1st. Wonder Bake in the main street of Geraldton. Hands down the best pie (we think) in the land. However you can't get one at this time. The pie master has sold out and moved across the road to run a cafe. His successor while worthy has yet to reach the heights of his predecessor. The pie master may return at some time as he should. That man was born to make pies.

2nd. Karridale roadhouse. Our survey was done about two years ago and I can't guarantee the same cook is there. When we passed through the beef curry pie was sublime.

3rd. The little bakery at Scotts Head. There is a young bloke just starting up. I suggest he has a great future in pies.

4th Nambucca Heads main street has two bakery's. The bottom one has won multiple awards and is worthy. The bakery up the road however is a standout. Once again the beef curry sublime.

Interestingly two of these bakeries turning out the Great Australian pies are run by Asians.

I have no affiliation with any of the bakeries or cooks mentioned.

I too love a good pie after a surf. Cape town had some amazing pies with lots of different game meats in them. My top 2 would have to be

1. Elaines Pies in Batemans bay - Mexican Pie is awesome

2. Gerringong bakery - Great chunky beef curry pie

Perhaps you did not come far enough North.

What about Humble Pies at Billinudgel??? They have one now at Caboolture also.

Thai Asian greens with Tofu, or even better Cauliflower with cheese. WOW!

A worthy mention without doubt should go to Humble Pies. We did get up there and were duly impressed

Ahhh. The consummate connoisseur.

I knew there would be input from the Dogman.

If experience counts for anything this mans opinion should be considered.

But Negg? Kelly.

The Novara store in Mandurah does a great Mexican pie.
If your down Denmark way any pie from the Denmark bakery. The baker there used to own the Miami bakehouse and has won every pie baking award there is. He also used to be our neighbour so he would test his new creations on us regularily. Kind of Dogmans heaven.

So that is where he went. We tried the Miami and were disappointed. Despite all the awards displayed, in our opinion there are better pies. He must have shifted before we got there. We did try the Denmark bakery and thought it worthy.

Culleys (in the High Street Mall in Freo) Steak and Mushroom are right up there. Great after a surf and also a pretty good hang-over fixer upper as well.

Karridale pies are always good as well as the Denmark Bakery.

Bugger, now I'm hungry....

I've had a Hanks Kitchen Pie back in the late 80's when I lived in Grafton. Not bad if I can remember. They must be OK to still be around after so many years.

Best value Pie I've had is Fosters Bakery at Nobby's on the Goldie. They are huge.

For taste - I'm partial to the Main Beach Bakery Pie but you'll need to mortgage your house to buy one.
