Photo from 1950. Is that a paddle lying on the deck of that first board?

I work with Perry Hatchett and he told me how his dad and a few mates made a canvas board and used a double ended paddle. There is a photo at the pub in Scabs with Perry's dad Jim using it. I have the photo on my phone and will upload it later. From memory I think it was dated 1946?

My grandfather was a founding member at Cott Surf Club and we have photo's in the family showing the same set up. Also in a surf book I have (Australian Surf Art I think) there is a reproduction of a postcard advertising Cottesloe beach as a holiday destination which has a guy riding a board with a double bladed paddle (circa 1940's). Will try and dig out photo's from um's garage.
