Magic or what.. .. Jeez he makes that new 12'6" Coreban look good.. and look at those conditions.. not to mention his foot work..

That was the board Woogie was raving about, love the 'hot rod' feel of the gloss black too.
Think it was this summer I was going to get my cross stepping down wind technique pegged, maybe next summer...
Great find DJ!
Coming down your way this week. I have just loaded one onto a truck yesterday so I hope Direct Freight can get it down there in one piece. Heading to SHQ for the Cerebius Cruise.
These boards are magic and light and tick all the boxes for a great all round board.

Those boys in Cape Town get a bit spoilt with those conditions (but is is pretty cold!).
Have a closer look at where Ivan is focussing his attention - toward the front part of his board. This is where most of the action is and he read the runs pretty nicely.
another thing to note is his paddle work. gets the paddle out of the water very clean and fast with a nice flick and swing.
if you leave your paddle in the water too long it will unbalance you or worse case drag you off the board.
good looking conditions with some turns needed in there
cheers
Looks fast. I would love to see a video like that with a speedo display from a GPS.
Anyone have a price and a weight for the 12'6" in the standard construction?
That's the best 1 min video I've seen and a big plug for the 12-6's in open water. Great foot work by Ivan and great advertising for his board.
I wonder if some person could invent a simulator to reproduce 30-40 knot down wind conditions like in the video that you could hire for an hour or two either for a bit of SUP fun or a little training session., of course it would be carbon neutral with solar panels and recycled grey water so its an easily justified purchase for the home or office, just for those times when you just have to go suppn " the suppalator"
We are fortunate to have Ivan here in Cape Town and he was probably the first to really do downwinders here. We now have a weekly series where we downwind every Wednesday and yesterday we had the biggest field to date with 29 entrants.
The course on the vid is our 10km run from Milnerton to Big Bay, the fastest time to date is set by Chris Bertish in 45min18secs which is 13.3km/h average speed.
As you can see in the vid it's mostly windswell and its probably gusting 35knots +
Ivan really makes that 12'6 go in the stronger winds, when its lighter he jumps on the 14' and it's amazing the speed he can generate.
It would be great to have some you breezers swing by and do a few downwinders with us - at the moment we're averaging 3 a week over 30knots of wind - it's pretty sick!
well Twiggy has just been down and he managed to get 7 DWD's in in 10 days. Between x-mas and New Year we did 7 days in a row.......last two only had 25knots so they felt like hard work.....
Sounds like 13.3 km/hr is a bit of a benchmark for a downwind paddle. Has anyone beaten that in Australia? I seem to remember that Dave Kalama's record for the Maliko run averaged nearly 15km/hr
I think we could beat it..
We've done our 10+ klm run in about 50 min and I'm sure we could get it well under 45.. especially with Dave on his new 18, Leon on his new Hobie 14 or Cam on the Jav.

Would be cool to get some times to compare although every run will have it's own unique qualities and therefore speed.
We have to enter a small bay and cross a sandbar just before the finish which does add a little to the time - first half Chris is averaging 13-14km/h second half he drops well under 13km/h (on the faster days) because of the portage section and some refraction issues on the last section. We've been a bit lazy with the GPS but have a 48.07 recorded which is where I'm getting the figures from.
Twiggy is nursing an injury and is using the SUP to speed up recovery - he reckons he has about 6 weeks to go before being 100% fit.
Just to make it official Hilly and myself did No 5 tonight and this was the best of the lot 25ish plus. Being a Friday night a frothy one was called for at the end.
OK - sounds like a bit of a challenge. I suggest that we put our best times forward for 5km and 10 km courses and see if anyone can get towards the magical 15km/hr mark. For us in northern Sydney, there are not really straight 10km bodies of water to consistently hold a high average speed, but we'll see how we go. There is a bunch of us doing going DW tomorrow so maybe we can start playing around with our GPSs and see what we come up with (Andy on the N17 might be able to find some speed). Personally, anything over 12km would be nice...
